    Or a whole lot of cows doing their thing. I don't think we can make enough bio and landfill methane to replace the natural gas for hydrogen we use now.

    Hydrogen could work for renewable energy storage. Monsoon seasons can cut PV output for longer than practical for batteries. Excess hydrogen from that might support local car fleets. I'd start with trucks first.

    We have a whole lot of garbage and sewage. The thing is that it is costly to turn the methane in to hydrogen and transport it to where stations are. Its much easier to generate electricity near the source or make methanol which is more easily transported. This is a problem for fuel cell consumer vehicles. Methanol phev is much easier and can be flex fuel, but the lobby doesn't like this as it wants to pretend the carbon of the gas is sequestered when hydrogen is made, but it won't be in a sewage or bio source.
