I would have expected the OEM/JDM from Sigma to be the one that had connectors/plugs for plug-n-play, not the aftermarket ones that we got. So if DocVijay had to hardwire his LEDs, I guess we shouldn't have expected better.

True. So, I guess hardwire is going to be the only option for now. I think mrbigh is going to wire his today and post some pictures. Patience Cairo, patience...

Thanks Horacio! You came through again.

I took the liberty of making your instructions into a 6 page Word file and posted it on our mods page on LIPOG website. (and added a couple of arrows showing which wires are used) - While you're there, feel free to look around!!)

Wow, Great work Horacio- first thing in the morning I will be completing the installation of my mirrors and then I wll be very happy. Your install looks pretty straight forward now that I know where to go to tie into the signals. I can't wait to wrap that project up and be the only Prius in my area with cool mirror signals. Thanks for all of the pictures to all of you guys.

I am starting to think of replacing my Scion TC wheels with new light weight 17" wheels to try to regain some of my mileage. I kind of like the look of the 16" touring edition wheel with the spokes, even though I know I am looking at the plastic cover. I may try to find a 17" wheel that has about 7 spokes. That is probably going to be my next project.

My wife just cracks up when she sees the Prius- she likens me to Steve Young on the Toyota commercials in that I am always talking about this little car- my poor NSX just sits in the garage......

    Ok Guys,
I'm done. Some small issues that could be noted, such as the small metal clips on the tweeters (They fall off when you pull the tweeter off and need to be rebent to hold the tweeter in when reinstalled) I'll write more later when I have time. The SO is demanding my time...

[attachmentid=5517]Hey, how cool is that? Those signal mirrors are the cat's meow!

I ended up tossing out the whole harness that came with Tommy's mirrors and only kept the in-line fuses which I did use. I ended up taking about 3 hours to do this install, the mirrors backs were already installed from last weekend. Running the wires from the doors into the interior took probably 2 hours.

I ended up running the new wires through the existing door gasket/wire harness so you see no wires at all and it looks perfectly factory. To do that I had to unplug those rubber harness gaskets (the rubber coverinbg you see when you open the doors) and then unplug the terminals where those wire connect inside of the car and pull all of that out of the inside of the car so it was hanging down inside the door jamb. Then I untaped the ends and was then able to easily pass a fish through the gasket and pull the new signal harness through the gasket and then retape the ends nicely and run the plugs back inside of the car and then plug the gasket/boot back into the body and the door and it looked just like it did from the factory.

I made the new harnesses, no big deal really, just a couple of wires wrapped in tape and then covered in shrink wrap. I endeed up with pulling the whole dash mostly apart and removing the radio and MFD to run the passenger wire harness through the car and make sure it was routed nice and out of the way. I tied everything nice and neat and ran all the wires along existing harnesses and tied them nicely so they won't move around or rub against anything. I used scothlock connects to connect to the 1 yellow and 1 green wires on the main harness plug for left and right signal power. All of my other connections were nicely soldered and wrapped.

When I got done my wife came out intot he garage and thought they looked "very cute". Anyway, I think it is one of the best modifications for safety and yes it adds flashing light which is now visible for someone in your blind spot as the light does light up the side of the mirror since the LED lights wrap around the side of the mirror.

Here are a few pictures showing the gassket/boot you remove to run the wires through and the end result. THANK YOU TO ALL who took the time to assist the rest of us wirth this project. I rate this a level 4 out of 5 for difficulty mostly because of the wire routing.

PS- Can someone tell me how to post text between pictures so I can tell everyone what the heck they are looking at? Thanks, Cairo94507

    Cairo,
I did pretty much the same thing; I routed the wires thru the lumen between the doors, only I used a coat hanger and didn't remove the lumen from between the doors. Talk about requiring some effort!!

Something I did as well was I didn't remove the mechanism from inside the mirrors at all. I took the mirror itself off, then I used flat gap tools to press the tabs and hold them while I pressed the two top clips that hold the outside cover, popped it offa and then just switched out the covers. Pretty easy overall.

Also, the passanger side harness had 2 female ends and the kit came with female ends, so I discarded the connectors and hard wired them using crimp connectors.

I discarded 90% of the main harness and used some of the scrap wires (The green and yellow ones in fact, to correspond with the wires I tapped into B) ) to lengthen the blue and red wires coming off the fuses. I tapped into the green and yellow using RadioShack phone tap connectors.

They do look sweet, especially on black. I'll take a pic or two when I get back next week.

As for adding text between pictures, just add a line over/in-between the picture text in the post.

I want to say thanks as well to all those who added to this topic. Without you guys this install would have been much more difficult then it was. I'm rating it a 4 out of 5 as well for the wire push between the doors.

Well, 2 of us spent more hours than we want to think about today doing the install. We ending up scrapping most of the wiring harness also (pretty much just saved the in-line fuses and 1 connector). After figuring out how everything snapped apart and feeding wires through the rubber boot (used a loooong tie-wrap that we drilled a small hole in to fish the wire through), and also used the tap connectors. Used the same tie-wrap to fish the wire behind console.

While the door was apart, decided to tap into the entry light on door and put LEDs in the foot wells so when the door opens the floor is illuminated. Looks pretty sweet at night!

I agree that this is a great safety mod. Drivers on the side of you now see your turn signal. The signal on the edge of the mirror is also visible from behind.

Not an easy mod, but really glad I did it. Tomorrow we tackle another LIPOG member;s Prius!

Cairo, to insert text you go to message post , EDIT, FULL and add the text lines you want in between the pictures, also insert some 2 lines spacing from top paragraph/picture. ;)

Congratulations to both of you, Cairo94507 and Inthewind, after some ups and downs, you finaly acomplish a very nice looking and practical Prius Mod.
Is it a type of accesory that can be recomended to other Prius owners?
I evaluate that given the labor involved, the total cost, the Priuschat user's support and the added safety features to the vehicle, is a ++ and win, win situation.
Other 2 members of LIPOG are in the work to complete their own LED Signaling Side View Mirrors also. ;)

Glad to see some folks have gotten their mirror covers and have them installed. A lot of good info has been exchanged on this thread by some dedicated PCer's. My hat's off to all of you.

I sure hope my mirror covers show up soon, and in the correct color. The tracking info died as there has been no updates since 10/26 when pkg left HK. :( I hope to see it tomorrow or Tuesday.

My covers have arrived. I just came home and found a note from Post Office (Who knew they did anything on Sundays). I will have to swing by tomorrow morning and pick them up.

    10/30/06:
Ok, they are here AND the correct color (3R3). I spent many hours last night / this morning pulling down specs from Toyota on the wiring. I hate to cut up perfectly good connectors and I find it hard to believe the ASIA and US models are wired that differently. Since I will probably not be getting to this for a while (no garage to work in), I will spend some time pooring over the schematics to see just what if anything is different on the connectors. If that comes to nothing, then I will look at doing the very well detailed procedure described above.

Set aside 4 hours in the garage, some cool music and snacks, good lighting and you are good to go with all the above pictures by everyone who has done it already.

Here is my car, finished with the signals in mid-flash via the emergency flashers.

I can attest to the visibility at night from behind the vehicle because I picked up a rental last night and had Kuntrychic drive home in front of me. They show up very well at variable distances...so much so that they remind me of Muth Signal Mirrors. So, a highly recommended mod for safety and increased visibility.

Several of us poured over the wiring. The connectors that ship with these covers do not apply to the Prius. The location they want you to use the connector has nothing to do with the turn signals. We just completed our second car with this mod and the way previously outlined by Horacio seems to be the way to go.

    Good Luck!

I left the house this afternoon to run some errands, and after I returned I was up on a ladder rewiring an outside lighting fixture when a neighbor called over to tell me thay had a package for me. The USPS had come minutes after I left with THE PACKAGE. And, yes, they are the correct color. 3R3. I think I could smell the paint, it is so fresh. While the dash is apart I want to prewire under the dash to the relay panel under the hood for aftermarket fog lights. So it might be a few days before I tear things apart.

harrycw, I checked out your other ride on your webpage. Very nice.
