Intertesting. The 150hp diesel compares well to the new Jetta TDI, no?

to 140hp one? Better, last Autobild review I read... and that was 2.2 D4D 136hp in Corolla Verso vs 140hp 2.0 TDI in VW Touran (Mazda 5 class vehicles).

When it comes to Prius, problem is that new Avensis will be priced the same, have bigger boot for sure, and definetly more luxurious materials in the interior...

So yeah, Prius doesnt have to be only fuel efficient for that price, it needs to be fast, safe, spacious, even sporty (or at least sportier, no need for that artificial feeling as in gen II as many Toyotas now use electric steering pumps and it works well), a bit crazy and quite an positive experience...

I'm not really interested in joining this grudge match of unknowns, but I wouldn't be quick to say the engine was responsible without knowing gear settings and Cd of air friction, for starters.

Also, heavier weights will affect city mpg a lot more than highway.

In Canada, it's 0.6L/100km more in the city (7.6 vs. 7.0) for the Corolla. Keep in mind the Yaris was done with 14" wheels and the Corolla with 15" (if they took the CE)

Oh I meant the latest one in the new Corolla vs. the new BlueMotion.

Bluemotion 1.6l is coming next year. Jetta 2.0 tdi is what most VW vehicles in Europe have now. Who knows really?
Previously, their bluemotion Polo mostly used very high gearing, delayed pedal response and removal of A/C to get to 4.0l/100km... units with AC had 4.5l combined consumption :). You paid more for that, so most european reviews said it was not worth it, because in real life, consumption was very similar to the same engine withouth bluemotion sticker...

Does anyone know if this new Prius will use valvematic?

I doubt it. It would be nice if they mass produce valvematic technology but I don't know if they're done "testing" it in their home market. It'll get Dual VVT-i for sure.

if it gets any vvti, it will probably get valvematic.

All European Toyotas will have Valvematic engines by mid 2009, introduction starts November 2008... All will be Valvematic and all will be 6 speed.

    So far we know:
1.33l: 101hp with start/stop system. Engine for iQ, Yaris, Auris, Corolla (both last base engine).
    1.6l: 132hp: Auris/Corolla/Avensis/Corolla Verso
1.8l 147hp: Yaris TS, Corolla Verso, Avensis
    2.0 152hp: Avensis, Rav4 (>10% more torque than 1.8l, only <6% less mpg).

All come with 6 speed manuals, or 7 gear CVT...

Production changes start in October, and complete lineup will be upgraded by April/May 2009. All diesels are being revamped with lesser consumption and 1.4 D4D is coming with 6 speed manual/MMT "now".

Unlike some other manufacturers who are announcing "special" efficient models, this is going to be full range wide, and all cars/engines will get it.

We dont know anything yet about start/stop in 1.33l. It is curious that they chose to include it into the cheapest engine for Auris/Corolla, which means that it cant be that expensive. Consumption difference between old 1.4l ZZ enine 97hp and new 1.33 101hp ZR Valvematic engine will be 25%. Difference between 1.6l Double VVTi and Valvematic is 8% - which probably means no start/stop for 1.6l engine.

I've never heard of a "7 gear" CVT. Or do you mean a dual-clutch transmission?

I wonder how long it will take to push auto start/stop across the range. That seems like such a dead-simple thing to do that can not cost much money, but pays large dividends in city traffic where you often sit still for minutes at a time.

Basically a CVT with 7 virtual gears. The computer would select preset gear ratios and tell the transmission to hold it and those 7 preset ratios to mimic a "regular" transmission. Never got the point of that. Tried that on the B200, gave up after 3 mins.

I thought VVT-i and valvematic are two separate things and that we can have both dual VVT-i and valvematic. Isn't that what BMW has with its Double VANOS and Valvetronic?

Well, I'm SURE the 1.8 l engine will be lighter than the 1.5 l one. It has bigger holes in it and air is lighter than aluminum! ;)

All kidding aside, Toyota has said the 2010 will be more powerful and will get better mileage. The figure thrown around is 10% improvement in mileage.

Of course the rumor mill has said recently the 2010 will be more powerful and get -lower- mileage. Because Americans want more power. But Americans can't afford new cars anymore due to the stock market fiasco so who cares what -they- want. ;)

Well I know that some some sites claim the new Prius will have a 1.6L engine and others say a 1.8L, but according to an article, there'll be an eco and an executive version, each one doing 89 g/km and 92 g/km respectively. Now, I was thinking, maybe the eco version will have a 1.6L and the executive will have a 1.8L. Does it make any sense?

    The article:

(ps. does anyone know when the new Prius will arrive at Australia?)

personally I am peeved the rumored Turbo isn't going to make it in the next gen prius.

1.8L is a nice trade off though. Let's hope the electric get's a improvement also.

for 0-60 I tested prius with my G-shock watch in hand. clocked at just over 10 seconds to reach 60 on nearly flat surface.some human error/delay in starting timer of course, so under 10 seconds easy.

top speed tested was 107MPH when limiter kicked in. The car felt as if it could at least hit over 115..the tires are only rated @112mph though. I took a video of this, but have yet to upload it my computers since 2 are running linux and another vista. My camcorder is kinda of old so no drivers for either os. Will need to install xp sometime and host the video on youtube or something.

Where exactly in Europe do you regularly cruise at 100 mph? When I lived in England (early 60s)they were building the original motorways which had no speed limits. According to Wikipedia speed limits across most of Europe now are around 130 kph, or 80 mph. Even on the German autobahn I think they now have a maximum speed limit of 130 kph.

The extra energy required to move that mass of metal at 100 mph is 56% higher than moving it at 80 mph. With gas prices in Europe at the levels they are, 100 mph seems pretty silly to me. Quite apart from the potentially higher accident danger.

yes even in germany 130kph but there are still some roads without a speed limit there
and ofcourse you have a lot off people ignoring that with there 306HP v6 overpowered cars that just go to fast!
