I was thinking more like three percent, but keep in mind this is a absolute number -- meaning the change is from 36% to 33%, or close to a 10% drop. This is the steep part of the power curve on the left; shifting the curve to the right with a bigger engine doesn't sound like a great idea, at least for this specific power requirement.

This graphic is from http://www.ornl.gov/~webworks/cppr/y2001/rpt/121813.pdf. Now that I look at it again, I'm not sure if the top orange line is the sum of the points below, or additive.

Thanks for the correction, I should have said 30 kW battery output.

The orange is the total loss of "Gears, chain, differential" + "Motor Rotor" + "Planetary gears, Sun gear, Generator Rotor".

If we are just talking about the PSD loss, it would be just the red (250 Watts loss at around 100 MPH).

Yes you're right. From the ANL graphs I read 37% efficiency at 10 kW, and 39% efficiency at peak, for a difference of 5%.
But I am betting that Toyota will be able to shift the efficiency curve upwards instead of to the right, by lowering rpm and/or tweaking the intake valve timing.

first problem with your assumption is that 1.5 NZ is same engine design as 1.8 ZR, which it is not. Just from engine block design, ZR series is on average 8% more economical than ZZ series engines that they replace.

And Prius is world car... just because some people in NA drive it at 60 mph, does not mean rest of the world does. As I said before, average traveling speed on highways in Europe is 85mph for slower cars. I can drive at 100mpg not to ever be pulled over by the cops.

The 1.8 litre with a 4-spd automatic in the corolla gets identical mileage to the 1.5 litre Yaris which weighs a lot less than the Corolla. This new 1.8 litre is ridiculously fuel efficient and it doesn't even have Valvetronic yet.

Obviously checking the Corolla mileage and comparing it to the Yaris wasn't an option <shrug>

too many unknowns to make predictions like that, but as Tideland said, facts are:

    2008 Yaris, 4AT 1.5l engine, 2326 lb, 14" tires
    35 MPG hyw

    2008 Corolla, 4AT 1.8l engine, 2723 lb, 15" tires
    35 MPG hyw

magic, eh? 400 lbs more, bigger tires, bigger engine :).

I don't understand the logic. We said Yaris vs. Corolla and he keeps spilling out the 2010 city/hwy mileage. No **** it's xx/yy cause there isn't any!

dont worry folks, in 2-3 years Toyota will have plenty of different hybrids to sell... including smaller ones that might be better suited for some members of these forums.

Does anyone know the performance of the 2010 Prius? Will it be comparable or even faster than a 2.4L Camry? Currently I'm driving a 2002 Camry and I'd like to change into a more economical 2010 prius but I wouldn't want to sacrifice performance

No but my speculation will be between the current and the TCH... say 9 secs to 60mph.

Your Camry does it in 10.1 secs with the automatic, 9.8 with the manual. The Prius does 10.5 sec. Are you really gonna notice the 0.4 difference?

TP already covered 0-60 mph comparison between the current gen Prius and the 2.4L auto Camry. If you are curious about the 30-50 mph (converted from 50-80kmh), they both can accelerate in the same 5 seconds.

2010 Prius will have more powerful electric motor and gas engine so it should definitely be faster than your current Camry.

might be even faster than that, if weight is not increased, having 50+ hp more than before will be really nice.

    Current Prius:
    Weight: 2920 lb
    0-60: 9.8 sec (Motortrend)
    1/4 mile: 17.4
    HP: 76+28 hp

    Camry Hybrid:
    Weight: 3660 lb
    0-60: 7.7 sec (Motortrend)
    1/4mile: 15.7 sec
    HP: 147hp + 40hp electric engine.

If new Prius keeps the same or similar weight - going up by maximum of 150lb, it is still going to weight 500lb less than Camry Hybrid. It should not have any issues having very similar numbers to it with 160hp total output as rumored.

Not sure how MT got their numbers though. I know the Prius did 13 secs with 4 average weight people on board (and 6 bars) and the Camry did 9 or 10 secs, I forget, with the same people.

testing on their track, as with every other car... they also equalize results based on enviroment, but thats basically the difference.

If 100+60hp is true for Prius III, then I can see it being very close to Camry Hybrid and maybe even better in some regards (speed wise)...

if they make it sub 9 sec 0-62 vehicle, it will make great deal of sense for selling it in Europe, as Prius pricing is same as Avensis, which is not only more luxurious, but also faster with excellent diesels that have decent fuel mpg. Current Prius compared ok to old 2.0 D4D's with 110hp, now with the least powerful Avensis having excellent 126hp diesel, and mid version with same pricing having pretty fast 150hp diesel (with lots, and lots of torque), and very nice 6l/100km consumption on average, you have to have more just than fuel consumption to entice buyers.

I read they are planning to double the sales for new Prius to 90k in Europe which means that it should compare well to new Avensis.
