I would have the same complaint. That is a very weird feature. I'm going to be honest here, and say I like that by barely touching the gas pedal, the cruise shuts off. Prius doesn't do that. Maybe that's only a 1st and second gen thing. 2010s do that?

It's a 2010. The cruise won't shut off for a fraction of a second. It caused me a bit of trouble initially, as I'd tap the brake to decelerate, and instead of gradually slowing down, it would pause, then pick up and 'hurry up' to keep going the original rate until I held the brake down.

An unexpected delay in braking is pretty hazardous in its self.

Is there an engineering rationale as to why Toyota needs to modify standard cruise control behavior on the Prius ?

How do you know that is how the Toyota data logging function operates? I am not saying you are wrong (or correct, for that matter); but I have yet to see a definitive statement from Toyota with any detail about how the data logging function in Toyota cars operates. In actual practice, when Toyota has been sued, there are times when they have settled and other times when they have produced data from the recorders that supports their position. It is all soooo curious.

I do not know. Might be like the other controls. Don't want to 'accidentally' bump it out of gear or whatever, and the engineers just kept going making all the controls 'bump friendly'.

cruise control runaway - Google Videos

Actually there are videos of other cars with runaway problems. Ford had LOTS of runaway cruise control failures, and has CONSISTENTLY blamed every one on the driver pressing the accelerator instead of the brake. Over and over again. Thousands of lawsuits, and gods only know how many 'incidents'. Yes. Couldn't find the brakes. For miles. Before the fatal and/or crippling wrecks that totaled their cars.

I guess Ford drivers are all morons. As were Chrysler drivers of about the same period.

A recent (two months ago) Ford runaway. Pay attention to the part where they claim that this is 'unheard of'.

A whole FORGOTTEN documentary about Fords gone wild.

This segment of the show is the most damning for Ford.

Not that any of this absolves Toyota from fault, it's just interesting how selective the coverage of Toyota incidents is.

Read this thread on why the delay may be happening. Its a simple fix.

From public statements made by Toyota, from private statements made by Toyota engineers, by what other car companies do, by my knowledge of microcontroller based control systems, and by the economics of consumer products.

Personally I wouldn't put much credence on his Corvette jacket. I wear an Olympic jacket -5 circles and all- but far from Apolo Ohno.

The 'vette - worthy of checking though.... still think his story smells - and waiting for a news flash any day now.

    You're gonna hate this....

Lets assume that your scenario is accurate. It costs $5 Billion to fix these vehicles. If TMUSA incurrs a $5Billion 'expense' to correct these vehicles that means that Uncle Sam ( via the IRS ) meaning you, your parents, your workers, all GM workers in the plants and in the stores are going to 'reimburse' Toyota for upwards of $2 Billion for that expense. TYVM.

Expenses increase, profits decrease, taxes payments to the IRS and state governments go down. Isn't the tax code great.

Toyota stated as much at the conclusion to the Saylor investigation.

Show one piece of evidence to suggest that that is Toyota's attitude...and don't bother with the internal memo, that was one memo and makes perfect sense to be relieved and is NOT a reflection of the company's policy or attitude. Everything we've heard, including some internal conversations with Toyota employees suggests 1)Embarrasment and shame that this happened, 2) a commitment to completely change the way complaints of this sort are dealt with in the future, and 3)an ongoing effort to resolve the concerns and issues that still exist.

You're way off base here Malorn...I come to GM's defense when they're unfairly slammed, but you should not take the negative views of GM from some here and retaliate in kind for no reason.

Stated what? I read a bunch of legal mumbo-jumbo that said basically nothing. I wonder how long their attorneys had to burn the midnight oil to come up with that line of garbage?

But no one comes out and makes an on-the-record statement. I wonder why? Actually, a lot more than little old me are starting to ask the same question.

Actually, Audi is under investigation by NHTSA for unintended acceleration.
