Toyota Increases Warranty on Replacement Prius Hybrid Battery. Now 3 years, Unlimited miles

I am shocked, but based on a number of internet sources (OlatheToyota, TorqueNews), that seems about right. They were about $1500 more last year!

 

The dealer gave me the following part number:

P/N: G9510-47031

Does that number correspond to a new battery? Is there a way to know what parts have gone into this battery as the service rep calls it "new, but remanufactured" if such a thing exists. If the battery can be installed by Toyota for $1450 That would seem to be the best way to go based on what I've read here on other threads. I would prefer a four year warranty from Texas hybrid batteries but uhaul wants $325 for a truck and dolly for a one way rental plus gas.

 

In general we like the new Toyota battery as the best way to go, and we are not worried about the warranty.
I do not think we have a single report in the USA of a Toyota replacement batt fail. That said I am confused if Toyota is changing the replacement batt quality, but sounds like the full retail price you were quoted is the new Toyota batt.

 

This is my last conversation with the dealer:

Me: But you said this is not considered a "new" battery, correct? It is "remanufactured" if I understood correctly. How is it different than a new battery? What parts or components are changed out?

Dealer: These parts are new, but remanufactured parts. Engines, transmissions and most hard parts on older model vehicles are remanufactured parts. New parts exists on new vehicles... aged vehicles have reman parts

it sounds to me like this guy thinks all 'hard parts' are not new. and i think he's clueless. you can look the part number up on line.

on the plus side, if you're getting a new battery for $1,400. all in? you may have set a new record, congrats!

The dealer's explanation of "remanufactured" shows just how confused and/or poorly informed the service writer/advisor is.

Regardless, that is the same p/n that is posted in MANY places, including PC, as a NEW OEM battery. In the screen shot below, no reference is made to it being rebuilt, used, remanufactured or anything else of that ilk.

 

it can't be rebuilt, because in cali, they have a rebuilt option. has to be a different part number.

 

Having read articles and posts spanning several years it seems like Prius battery policies are evolving. Some states had the initial warranty extended to 10 years/150k while other states remained at 8 years/100k. In 2016 replacement battery warranties were extended to 3 years but now what I read/hear is the warranty is back to 1 year. I can only assume that $ is the driving force behind the changes whether they are simply looking to save $, retain customers (again $) or to maintain a good reputation (again $). I will probably attempt to speak with the service department rep and manager to get my questions answered satisfactorily and get everything in writing. Any specific questions I should ask or terminology I should use to figure out if I am getting a legitimate battery?

 

how does that work for Lexus. Our hybrid SUV is about 12yrs old .... Still going strong. But I'm sure it's just a matter of time. I doubt they work the same deal because both the 400h & the hi-hy have more modules. Still, one can dream.

My experience with Toyota part numbers is that sometimes they do sell officially remanufactured, Toyota-branded parts, and you can look for them by suffixing -84 to the usual new part number.

My first discovery of that was a couple years ago when I found that a 47730-12490-84 was a very high-quality remanufactured brake caliper.

Knowing that, I guess it wouldn't surprise me very much to see something like this, right?

...confusing but it sounds to me like you got a new HV batt for half price as a nice gesture from Toyota. Apparently we here at PriusChat have lost track of the warranty policy for the replacement batt, we thought it was up to 3-years now, but it was 1-yr for a long time. In any case, we are expecting life-of-vehicle actual battery life (no problem).

There really has not been any change to the orig OEM batt warranty 8-yrs/100k miles for standard/regular states, extended to 10-yrs/150k for CARB states. TX is not a CARB state, so the standard warranty period applies..

I would say @ericbecky is/are one of our main HV battery technical experts these days here at PriusChat, so they are best able to help.

 

if you click on mark010101's link in post #10, you'll see the toyota memo detailing the 3 year warranty, if dealer installed.

 

This seems an appropriate sticky thread as not all dealers are informed on this. My dealer wasn't.

I forwarded the memo to the dealer that has been giving me the best price. The dealer "checked" with Toyota (I can't really verify if they did but it took more than a day for them to tell me if they were going to honor the memo) and the dealer said they were told 12 month/unlimited miles is the current warranty. I also called Toyota customer care and was quoted the same but they told me to contact the dealer. Just to see if the other 2 dealers nearby would quote a three year warranty, I called them as well. The other 2 dealers told me 12 months as well. That leads me to think that the memo has been replaced by a newer memo. But maybe that memo is still valid in carb compliant states.
