So, now, we've (d)evolved the discussion into bragging about our individual financial savy as evidenced by credit reports... it just gets better and better...

But, still no discussion on why one of a platinum or gold plan is better than the other...

Braggart p), have you tried Equifax this year? Is this $8 charge to SEE the score a new development, as I see annualcreditreport.com provided you with the score for Equifax. No such luck here.

I just signed up for a free 10-day MyFICO trial and Experian places me @ 779 (I think this one was over 800 prior to the Prius loan).

 

Oh, and by the way - paying off a house ain't all that financially savvy. REAL inflation (such as if one adds back in all those things like food and energy costs that are stripped out of the numbers reported by the government) is in the 6-9% range (and only likely to increase as the effects of our recent monetary policy actions take hold).

Smart money will borrow a chunk of cash against the house at 4% and invest it.

Very reasonable way to hedge against inflation. To me though the economy looks more like recession or stagflation. Hard to know what to do other than stay healthy and keep working.

If one should decide to purchase an extended warranty, my experience as a service writer leads me to believe the best option when considering an extended warranty is to get the longest option available for the top of the line coverage.

For example, if you can afford either 4/80 Platinum or the 5/100 Gold, I recommend going with the 4/80 Platinum or you're going to be frequently frustrated with "not covered" repairs.

As I've said before, different people have different priorities. What makes sense for one person may not make sense for another. One's reasoning for deciding a certain way may be completely different from another's. For example, fuel economy & environmental considerations were #4 and #5 respectively on my list of purchasing decisions.

My wife and I were offered the $1295 6/75000 platinum plan today by the 'financial guy'. We asked him if we could think about it and he said he would give us until Monday to make up our minds; that he needed to incorporate it into the deal when he sent the VIN number as a sale to Toyota. After that, he said, we'd have till 3/36000 to get one at retail ($2000).

My thinking at the time was that maybe we would purchase it at a discount from this site. But now I am not so sure.

I didn't buy one for my last car (A 99 Honda Civic) and it's at 85,000 miles now and hasn't had a hint of a problem...I would have thrown my money away.

My wife's 92 Honda Accord also was purchased without an extended warranty and now sits in our driveway at 135,000 with nary a problem.

OTOH I've always bought extended warranties for my Lenovo laptops...why? Peace of mind.

If I were going to buy the warranty..it would be the Platinum. What a drag it would be to actually gamble on the warranty and then find out I had to shell out for a non covered repair. Ouch.

On another topic: Judgeless, How do you generate that pie chart of your electric use. our bill is really high and i would love to know how we are using power.

If both your Honda’s never had a problem why would you consider an extended warranty on a Toyota? The highest rated cars from Consumer Reports for reliability are.

1) Scion
2) Lexus
3) Toyota
4) Subaru
5) Honda

You will find your Toyota will have even less repairs then your Hondas. You picked one of the best laptop vendors out. For the last 12 years I have owned an IBM/Lenovo T42, T60 and now a T510. I have never had an issue with any of them.

^^ Not as pretty as what Judgeless has, but a kill-a-watt is real useful and I'm willing to wager a fair bit cheaper.

 

I have a couple kill-a-watt devices. They are great and a lot cheaper. One nice thing about the Brultech setup is that it sends all your stats to Google Power Meter.

It's fascinating: Judgeless considers purchase of an extended warranty as a waste of money. But, will go and piss away a bunch of money to put new circuit breakers just so he can figure out that his toaster used $0.25 of electricity.

A Kill-A-Watt costs about $15 and the payback time is about 200 kW-hours. An extended warranty costs $1000 and the most likely payback time is never. You're welcome.

 

Just how do you calculate your kill a watt payback? How does a kill a watt generate savings?Show me the math, smart-guy.

Unless you needed it to tell you that your appliances consume energy. Some of us know that without spending the 15...

 

I have posted fact after fact on why an extended warranty on a Toyota is a waste of money. You make a lot of assumptions. You claim I wasted money on new breakers. Your assumption is wrong. They are small Hall Effect sensors you put on each breaker that cost about $1 each.



Knowing that my toaster uses $0.25 or $2.50 each time a use it is valuable information. I can determine if a new toaster will save me money in the long run. Over a couple of years of knowing what uses a lot of power pays for the monitoring system over and over.
