Toyota customer service,on paint chipping.*must see

    true but I just figured more layers of paint means a harder chip before metal shows as there are more layers to cushion the impact.

    That would be correct. Even on a steel hood you might get some surface rust in the chips but its not going to rust through the galvanized steel.

    Thats where the misconception comes from, there aren't more layers of paint. Single stage, dual stage (Cleacoated), and tri-stage paint are the same thickness and have the same number of layers. Its just on a single stage car they're all colorcoat. On a dual stage car the top 2 or so are clearcoat. On the tri-stage one is pearl, then the top two are clear and the rest are colorcoat.
