Featured Toyota Believes Fuel Cell Prices Will Match Hybrids

    Tesla seemed to have had foresight on this. Straubel (Tesla CTO) stated back when Tesla first started that they were counting on 6 to 8% per year efficiency improvement in batteries, which has been holding pretty well (the electric car version of Moore's law). That seems small, but it is compounding, which means battery energy density doubles about every 10 years. If this holds, then Toyota and other low cost car manufacturers are going to be in big trouble in a few years if they don't have an electric car solution, because Tesla will be able to build a $20,000 long range electric car. This means they may be able to take over the low cost car market just as they've basically taken over the luxury car market.

    Funny you mentioned “$20,000” as that is pretty close to my upgrade cost from a Prius Prime to a Model 3. Just a coincidence, not an advocate.

    what if bev prices come down as fast as fuel cell?:eek:

    hmm, article is from may 24th. so in a few short weeks, toyota has reversed course on bev's, 'due to the sudden surge' :ROFLMAO:

    talk about a ship without a rudder...
