They are losing a ton I am sure. But I was speaking of CPO’s they are far from free. Big drop yes, but still not free.
You have until November 2nd to get $15,000 hydrogen with a CPO Mirai, and many of them are priced under $15k. Offer Details | Local Toyota Offers | BuyAToyota.com/SoCal | Buy A Toyota
Many! Not so, the average is $19k for a CPO. There are leader cars being advertised with discounts knocking off $7K, or have higher than average mileage, but they don’t last long.
How many years after first sale did Prius become near break even or profitable for Toyota? Mirai has been out ~5 years: SACRAMENTO — Toyota Motor Corp. said it is starting to make a profit from its Prius gasoline-electric hybrid car, four years after introducing the low-pollution vehicle. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2001-dec-19-hy-prius19-story.html%3f_amp=true
By comparison BEVs have been profitable for years: ...reverse engineering analysis and tear downs estimate that the cost of building a Tesla Model 3 is around $28,000 for both materials and labor. The Cost of a Tesla - The Costs of the Tesla Models, Maintenance, Charging and more Comparing profitability trajectories of hybrids and BEVs, this bodes poorly for fool cells in this class of vehicles.
Of the CPO Mirai currently on Cars.com, 59 of the 115 are listed under $15k. Many of those are at around 30k miles, which below average for a three year old car in California. Of course they don't last long. with the $15k hydrogen card, they are essentially free. Apples to oranges. The Prius didn't net any profit at first, because of accounting for the R&D costs. Toyota was netting income over the cost of production for each car from the beginning. The Mirai is a hand built car that is using new technology components that themselves aren't in mass production. The other hand built car they sold recently used a traditional ICE, and they charged more for it. It costs Toyota more to make one Mirai than they charge for it. if it didn't, they would have been putting out press releases about it.
No claims to coining the term here nor is it personal. Has been around for years and more true today than when it first appeared. And Leaf, thanks.
Second Leaf on lease. Great secondary vehicle for us and great incentives. Probably not a good primary vehicle for most.
It would be less expensive to buy run 4 ton AC units near trees for watering ... and run the condensation water pipe around them, than to run cars requiring coal or NG to cheaply reform hydrogen fuel. i mean ... if we both wana go down the crazy talk path. .
well - at one time? Yea, they were pretty much free, because the $15K free fuel was what the used cars cost at our local dealership; Toyota Used Mirai's, for Free? | PriusChat If you GET a $15k benefit, after shelling out $15k ... that's like getting a free car. One things for certain .... with a zero sum car ... you know longer have to worry about deprecation. The prior owner? not so much. what the heck ... at first i thought it was some kind of art deco fountain someone turned it into, what with no resale. A Pope mobile? Did it come with a vatican reformer so they could re-fuel it? oh ... and a 10K Lb psi compressor? because there doesn't seem to be any stations in Italy or Vatican City. do they have to flat bed it back & forth to refuel it some where's elss in the EU? .
Yep - that's why the thread was started; Toyota Used Mirai's, for Free? | Page 4 | PriusChat wondering if the depreciation was still that bad - and looking at our local dealership - here's what kind of showings they have; To the original owner (presuming not a lease) whose tax status put them in the "alternative minimum tax bracket" ... you paid (with tax, dealer prep) over $60,000 because IRS voids rebate money under Alt min Tax. Resale ... the dealer or manufacturer or both ... are PAYING you-the next owner nearly $3,000 to get rid of it. Negative resale. Wow. They REALLY wana get rid of these things. Biz 101 ... supply & demand. Toyota/manufacturer/dealer would do better to pull the cylinders out & use 'em for a compressor ... scrape off the platinum from the fuel cell to get scrap value & toss the rest of the stack ... then put more bateries in it to at least have a usable EV. .
Of course you pick one of the leader cars to make your point. What about all the others at Toyota of Orange and Tustin In the $19k range?
