Maybe he was just testing to see what you'd say. At that point if you had wacked it with a 2x4 or something, he might have been hoping for a different reaction (or a confession?) than just coming to your new car and finding it cracked.

As an aside, I wouldn't suspect temperature alone as the cause, since cars are designed with high temps in mind. Manfacturing defect, or some sort of assembly defect? Of course the "high" temp probably was the trigger for the crack, just that it's defective if it cracks because you park it with the windows down!

Anyhow, Aaron, I certainly hope you don't have to argue with your service rep about this. Obviously it's covered under warranty though, so either they agree or you argue ...

i will keep everybody posted. also hopefully we will hear from mielikki_eo who originally posted this thread with the same problem, as to how it was handled in that case.

i tend to agree with the mfg defect theory, rather than the heat, but it was the only thing i could possibly think of that was other than the defect theory, since not only had it been working fine but after that it just sat there unused.

well, just to keep this thread updated, my car goes in tomorrow for the repair. it was approved by toyota's regional rep, then the manufacturer of the part, not toyota, said THEY would not replace it under warranty because of the crack!

however, toyota prevailed, and the part is in. now just have to hope the dealer has someone decent work on it. the service tech already told me they have never taken apart the dash of a prius...
