Ok, I said I would post my stats a while ago. I forgot and filled up so I did not gather the data. So, two weeks later it is finally time to fill up again! Here are the results I got:

    Last PIP [Flashing.]
    Odo 1: 443.8mi
    MFD MPG: 46.7mpg
    Filled with: 9.35gallons
    Gas total: $33.77
    Personal calculated mpg: 47.4
Guessed avg temperature is 50 degrees fahrenheit.

I am glad to see that my calculated mpg is higher than the MFD. I would be a bit upset if it was higher than the real economy. I am satisfied with these results because I drove like crazy, twice had at least 1 1/2 the max load in the back of the car. I really give these cars a beating, but they still do well. I cannot wait until 80 degree weather, with full summer mixture gas! It should really shine then. (And not rushing to class/work at the last minute.) I need to leave early and slow down. :)

    another routine tank.......
All that's required is to slow down, and learn how to manipulate the HSD.
Excuse the quality, it's a pic of phone pic. 59.5/645

My co-worker / car pool person just bought an 08 magnetic grey prius and he called me excitedly (because I've been coaching him) to say his guage now says he's averaging 50mpg on this, his 2nd tankful ... and THIS is after just 3 weeks.

I'm at 350+ miles ... with half a tank. This will likely be my 3rd 700+ mile range tank (pics of the 1st two previously posted) presently reading 71.7mpg ... whoo hooo!

Can I assume all this 700+ mile per tank driving, none of you guys are doing serious high way at 60MPH or faster on those tanks?

I mean once I hit the highway, there's jack squat I can do about my econ - the car run's the ICE - that's all there is to it. Even on flat level ground, at 60mph on an empty highway - best i've been able to get is about 47-48MPG

That's correct. My 700+ tanks have been mostly or completely non-highway miles.

Thanks Jim, being a new Prius owner i'm trying to understand everyone's MPG numbers, it's great to say "I get 700miles per tank" but that's only relevant if both you and I drive the same roadway, in the same climate. So really the number of miles per tank doesn't say much if you are comparing apples to orangutan's.

So what kinds of speeds are you driving to achieve this type of mileage, and what kinds of roads? Rural mostly? Stop/Go city?

Mostly suburban and urban. Part of my strategy is route planning. When possible I choose routes where I can safely drive at <40 MPH and avoid unnecessary stops (assuming any added distance doesn't increase total fuel net consumption). Actual speed depends on speed limit and traffic volume.

My 600 mile tanks are acheived with 98% interstate driving, at 60 MPH.
The rolling GA terrain may contribute, because me and my cruise control can maintain a warp-stealth for long periods of time, on the downward inclines, and maintain 60 MPH. So, the car doesn't always have to run the ICE, even on the highway.

Throw some rush-hour, stop and go, into the mix, and my numbers really get pumped up, because that's a good opportunity to expoit steath and glides....

A little motivation to slow down and try 60 MPH.

99% interstate travel over 6 days and I don't even have a low fuel warning yet. This car never ceases to impress me.

I've just begun implementing some of the hypermiling techniques and my fuel economy with a 60/40 highway/city mix has gone from the low 40's to the mid 50's. I'm just on my third tank of gas and things have steadily improved from my first 400-mile tank to the 455 miles I have on this one with a 1/4 tank left.

420 to 460 miles. Usually wait until it beeps at me. I have yet to put in more than 10 gal. I have heard there may be problems with the bladder in the tank, not letting you get the full 11.9 gal.

I have been filling up at 480 miles going into 1 pip (within the first 30 miles). I usually fill between 8.0 and 8.75 Gallons. I am not going to try to hit 600 miles traveled just for the sake of it, playing it safe.

I get between 390-425. In this warm weather I'm getting over 50 mpg. I love it.

I don't hold a candle to 9-G's 600+ (IMPRESSIVE), but my personal best is 480 w/o the last pip flashing on a 9.01 gallon fill-up. :) Now I'm just looking for an oil change in the Los Angeles area.

We filled up, drove 122 Mi. Refilled with 1.73 Gal. for an adv. of 70.50 Mile to the Gal.
The trick is to get behind a big transport Truck.

Just use the 10 gal rule (it's an 11.8 gallon tank I think) meaning, look on the dash at your average. If it's 43 MPG go 430 miles and you'll usually wind up topping off at just under 10 gallons. This leaves plenty of reserve in case the next gas station is 40 miles away. That's how I've been doing it. I don't drive the same every tank full so some times using that rule I will go 470 miles (if the avg on the screen says 47 MPG) or 410 miles (if the avg is 41 MPG).

Warning! If you have been averaging XX and and the next 100 miles is up hill this rule won't apply as your average will rapidly and drastically drop! The upside of hills are not a Prius's friend, it's the other side it likes best.

P.S. The pips and fuel gauge (really a fuel guestimationometer at best) is no way to manage when to fill up. Many posts have documented well the strange behavior of the time and miles the pips drop to one and start to blip. I've had a single flashing pip start at 300 miles which I ignored for over a 100 miles and when I finally unable to put more than 8.7 gallons in.
