I just want to echo what Jim has said. P&G and paying careful attention to traffic and route planning can help achieve some great mpg results. It helped me get several 1000+ tanks last summer with a best of 1056.5 miles at 86.9 mpg.

When driving through city try to not to ever drive with yellow arrows. It seems like it is improving you but more energy will be spent recharging. Work on doing coasting with no arrows at all when you reach a tad over the city speed limit.

No worries here. I'm just glad that someone is bringing up what a Prius is capable of.

To add to what morpheusx said, yellow arrows should be avoided mostly due to all of the conversion losses involved: chemical to mechanical(gas burned in the engine), mechanical to electrical(engine to generator), electrical to chemical(generator to battery), chemical to electrical(battery to electric motor), and electrical back(motor to move wheels) to mechanical.

Cetainly the outside temperature plays an important roll. Oviously, in really cold weather, here in the northeast, "range" is seriously affected. However, don't forget about the kind of driving you do. Wher I live, I am either going up or down hills; about an elevation change of 200-400 feet. You never gain back going down what you lost going up. For the record, in the winter (under my conditions) I usually fill up at 2-3 bars which is around 275-325 miles. In the Summer, I get a range of about 350-400 miles.

Here's some data correlating the temperture to the gallons and mileage on a tank. More info on my web site - Paul's Prius

As the smilies suggest, I'm fairly insane. A good dose of OCD goes a long way to hitting these numbers.

Here's a typical level of planning that goes into a drive to work:
CleanMPG Forums - View Single Post - Post & Analyze Each Other's Commutes!

Took about 6 months of planning to arrive at this route. It's rare that you can get a route that is this conducive to high MPG. Some routes are even better, but many are worse.

    Route:
    _30 minutes and 14.3 miles (3.6 highway; 10.7 city).
    _7 stop signs
    _19 lights
_25 turns of 90 deg or tighter

On planned routes, I generally get from 80-90 MPG. On blind routes I'm usually in the low 70's. My tank average is simply a reflection of how many of my trips were unplanned and unsurveyed.

MORPHEUSX, thank you for your suggestions.

From what i noticed, the NO ARROWS are a "glide-mode" correct? I have been able to reach the glide mode, but for just seconds (and i mean just seconds) at a time. It's a very fine line between yellow/recharge/no arrows.

I'm wearing thin-soled shoes, but to me, this fine line of finding the ALL BLACK mode is very difficult (often times the pedal moves just millimeters).

Do you owners try to practice this religiously? Is that what it takes? Maybe i have cement in my shoes...................bad for me. :noidea:

Any further help would be very much appreciated.

    HAPPY EASTER people!:amen::flame:

    THANKS DAN!

you know....................to keep this all in perspective, someone asked me what my real-world mileage is on my PRIUS. when i told them to look at my overall average on the screen, it showed 47.1, they just kinda looked
    dumb-founded.

my conclusion is that life in my new prius is good..........can't complain at
    all.

i can't tell you all how much "mature" driving has changed my thoughts. like the commercial...............been passed 8 times within one mile by the same driver, only to keep catching him at the lights............"smart-driving", then when he really got upset, one STOMP of the gas pedal and
off i went, i lifted at 35, he passed me at 65, then he got a ticket from the local PD. hehehehehehehe:mmph::heh:

    PUNCH IT!!!!!!!!!!:flame:

i'm gonna put a Nitrous Oxide decal on my car, lets see the reactions..............maybe also a LI-PO and NOS!!!! then my custom plate will be..............low 12's, 47mpg,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,:)))))))

Hi my name is Steven- I've been lurking for a week or so now ever since I purchased my 2005 Prius.

To put it shortly I am falling in love with my car and actually, it is changing my life!

I know I know..sounds cheesy but it is very true. "Mature Driving" fits in well with owning a prius and personally I can not imagine NOT driving like an old lady when driving a prius. It really highlights the cars abilities.

Anyways..I drive a lot slower, leave earlier then I would have in the past, and enjoy driving. Prior to the prius I was driving 80mph or more in a hyundai santa fe getting 250 per tank. Right now, I am on track to hit about 460.

    Love it!

A pip is one of the little bars in the Prius' digital gas gauge.

Welcome to the world of Prii! I thought I saw that someone liked KC Summers, and purchased a car there. I enjoy them also, they are ok. I purchased a 1st generation Prius there from a salesman named Kenny, it was a 2003. Then I purchased a 2005 Prius from Doug at Dan Hecht. The latest Prius endeavor took a bit more. I found a completely loaded Prius at Pekin and decided to go to that dealership. It has turned out well for me, the car rocks. However, at one point I went to Dan Hecht for an estimate and diagnosis on another vehicle, they didn't bill me. I found out that their diagnosis was wrong and had it fixed elsewhere, a few months later I got a bill, and for an incorrect diagnosis. Unless I have a real need for them, I might take a break from them for a while. All these dealerships are wonderful though. I have been getting about 46mpg now that I have returned from Wisconsin. I don't know if it is the local weather, gas, or terrain.. but I seem to get the worst gas mileage locally.

You'll get it, you just feather that pedal, it is performed most easily in city driving and between 35 - 40 MPH.

This has become quite routine. And the Prius has totally changed the way I drive.

Incredible mileage. Is this mostly city driving? What techniques do you use to achieve such a high mileage tank?

    About 300 miles.

I make no major effort to save gas. I'd annoy too many commuters on our Toronto streets.

It's mostly interstate driving on a 100 mile roundtrip commute several days a week. 60MPH is my highway speed target, using cruise control for steady state travel, and I have several miles of slow-n-go traffic where I employ stealth and glide extensively and without affecting general traffic flow.
If I'm traveling on downward sloped roundway I'm always in a glide, stealth or warp stealth, burning no gas.
I need to start a Prius driving clinic and show folks how to do this. I'm afraid many Prius drivers have no concept of what the car is capable of or how to effortlessly attain these modes of operation. But if they keep coming here, maybe they will.
Here's another example. I've got about 40 pics like this now.
