also i sadly ended up declining the red prime. i'm sure i'll be riddled with regret over the rebate. i'm handing myself over to the universe and hoping my little C holds out till i make it through the wait list. getting cars these days feels like 4d chess.

as a canadian driver I have muscle memory to turn on my lights whenever I drive, day or night. and then high beams on dark country roads that get turned off when i see an oncoming vehicle approaching. that was just the driver training here when i was a teen, although i don't know if the guidance has changed since then.

pretty my C has DRL but I still set the headlights to on manually, and in my experience even set to 'on' they are way less piercing than the LED headlights i see on lots of vehicles these days, so hopefully i'm not irritating anyone

I traded my 2002 Prius for a 2017 Prius Prime despite the economics that were involved. My Gen1 Prius had virtually nothing wrong with it. I replaced the battery for only $1,300. If I kept it I would have replaced the radio because a few buttons had stopped working intermittently. That would have been a couple hundred dollars.

Most of all, I wanted the new features that are only available on newer cars. I figured that I only need the newer car for another 10 years while making monthly marathon runs the length of Calif. By the time that I wear out the car we will have parents living with us, so no need to worry about the 10 hour drives 4 times a month. I will also be too old to drive safely.

Click and Clack always said that the cheapest car is the one you already have.

I never drove a Prius C, but there was a model down here with some black cladding around the wheel wells. It was smart looking. A six speed manual and a diminutive max hybrid set up would make it a fun ride, imo.

i do have the consolation that i do legitimately love my C, so having a bit more time with it isn't a bad thing :) i'm not a sporty person, and it is a fantastic city car for my needs!

edit: turns out i'd never have gotten the $5000 rebate anyway, the federal funds dried up almost immediately after they announced the program was winding down. not exactly good news, but at least the disappointing outcome was in the end, inevitable.

True, it has had the opposite effect I no longer see cars without lights. My subconscious categorizes cars with no lights as parked and not moving. Had near collisions with pre DRL cars twice because my brain no longer saw them and i have to force myself to see them again.

As to the OP, 150k km is still young for you. My cars start to have major problems at around 220k km or past 16 years whichever comes last. At the miles your going, that's at least 5 more years. It's more likely to die of rusted body parts than the battery.

My 2010 hatchback which are notorious for oil burning, was bought last year by salvage/fixer uppers at 265k km. They swapped an engine from another Prius then resold the car as the battery was still good.

thats true, and its been reassuring to hear that sentiment a few times! for the most part i am happy to keep this car going as long as it makes practical sense. for a while i was actively against the idea of a new vehicle since everything available felt less appealing than what i had (the prius c leaving north america really saddened me!) but the new primes finally caught my eye. :)

if i was to lament anything, it'd be the fact that the current car purchasing market feels kinda wild. like i have to plan ahead on a timespan of years and with nervous/paranoid speculation, rather than just enjoy my current vehicle and trust there will be some decent options available when i feel like its actually time to move on. was also motivated by the fact that i've noticed increasing larger ticket things that needed addressing on my current vehicle in the past few years, which started tipping the scales towards the temptation of something shiny and new.

This is not a recommendation, but I just came across it and thought it was interesting.

If your battery is the problem, this outfit sells sodium ion replacements. Feel the Sodium-ion Power!
