Thanks for reminding me. I've been getting lazy for a couple of days and using more pedal. My issue is with traffic control, but that is a story all unto itself. For me It's definatly a balance game between do I stop and try to start up again feathering it or should I go a bit faster and watch the traffic control timing more.
The wife drives a civic and I've been learning how to get more mpg out of that for 8 years. And I still learn more tricks once in a while. I drove a planned 50 mile route last night and got 63.something mpg with it. My record for that 50 mile run is 69 mpg. I was really dejected pulling into the driveway without hitting the 70's.
But the prius and especially the plugin is a whole new game.

You will get it figured out. Yesterday I went 89 miles, one charge read out said, 125 MPG.
Watch stop lights and try to time them, yep thats good. You can leave stop lights and signs briskly (not fast) and get up to speed. Watch for your opportunities to coast.

Amazing quite a few of you got some much more EV miles than HV miles... You drive from charging stations to stations? :p

My EV has always shown 14.x miles but can only drive up to around 9 miles plus... My car is almost 3 months old and around 2700 miles now. Not sure if the EV miles will be more in the future...

    Small town America.
I can drive just about any were in 3-6 miles. So a round trip 6-12 miles in all electric. almost always the only time my ICE runs is at 124 mile warm up cycle and when I go on long out of town trips, 450-500 miles in a day. 4-5 times a year. Winter time around 9-12 ev miles. I usually can get 12-16 miles all EV. Middel of summer a little better than that. All charging is done at home.

This morning, the display showed 18.7 miles after the full charge. The previous best was 17.5 miles. I'm hoping to replicate the 18.7 mile range, after every charge.

On a different note, Non-EV MPG is better by 3 or 4 miles, with "Power Mode" and the drive feels just like a regular car. I live in a hilly region and that may be the reason for better MPG in "Power Mode".

This does not seem to make any sense. The EV miles is an estimate based on "your" past driving distances. (it does some kind a moving average, maybe weighted, on your last ~30 or so trips. Through some testing I guess it is about 30 trips.) It is hard to figure out how you only get 9 miles but your estimate shows 14. Can you give some more details and maybe try to accurately measure a few trips?

We had a cold snap here the last 2 nights down in the low 50s F - and my available ev was already down to 16 yesterday at dusk and 15.9 this morning. I was thinking about what retired posted above about his charging routine and was wondering if you would share your charging routine?
I've only had my pip for a month, but I had to do a pack rebalance this spring on our civic so I'm real interested in what others observe about their packs, especially ambient interior and outside temps, cell temps ( if you have a scangauge), charge rates, available ev miles, actual ev miles, a/c use, observations regarding the pack cooling / heating system, etc. Really just anything you think might be effecting the pack and follow form of the others with the best results.

But mostly to start off and maybe I should start a new thread for this ( if I figure out how to word it ) what retired posted above about his routine. How he charges and what types of ev and hv trips he drives. Of course, add when using power mode too if you do.

Yeah retired, I was thinking last night long and hard about what you posted above about your driving and charging techniques
My game so far for the last month was to see how many of the chargers in the area as I could make it to and between in ev and observe the differences between 120v charging and 240v charging as well as the other ins and outs of this ev charging thing. And getting used to waiting the extra time for more ev, like the pip was an ev only.
I doubt my ICE is even broken in yet.

markabele - thanks for this thread, doing the math and sharing the formula. Will also be working on understanding the calculus :)

I live in Los Angeles, lots of stop and go traffic/lights. I reset my trip meter every morning, shown 13.x 14.x EV miles, but I can only drive around 9, 10 real miles. I use either normal or power mode.

I will continue to monitor this. Thanks!

If those are your real EV miles driven 9-10 miles, then over time you will slowly decrease your estimated miles until you reach 9-10 EV estimated.

    LA2014Prius,
I would really try to time lights best you can. And do your best to not have to slam on the brakes. You should easily be getting over 11 in that nice LA weather, especially at slower speeds.

You can't really drive slower speed in LA... They will shot u... ;) I drive at spirited pace and no, I don't slam on brake. I try to come to a stop without using fiction brake so that energy got charge back to the battery.

Since late last week, I have been charging my car at work and my overall MPG has gone up to 130-150!!!!! But the EV miles seem the same... Shown 14.x miles but actual mile is around 10.

FYI I drive about 18.5 each way to work, that's about 37 miles round trip. Sometime a slight detour on the way home.

After a full charge last night, for whatever reason; I got only EV 12.x miles this morning. I was only able to drive 8.5 miles before ICE kick in... I was driving in Eco mode with AC on; all local stop and go traffic.

Is there something wrong with my battery?

8.5 actual miles is incredibly low for warm weather.

Sounds about right with AC on. Double check the passenger seat heater isn't on.

The battery is probably just fine. Stop and go can kill EV mileage, especially if you have to accelerate hard due to traffic pressure.

is there a name for this second battery graphic, the one seen when there is no ev available.
    eco-bat-purple.jpg

now to figure out when the car will use that energy from the pack for ev driving and when it will not...

The ""car"" doesn't like it when the driver tries to force it to do things it doesn't want to do.

I agree with bilbo , starting up from dead stop and climbing grade kill ev
double that for starting up from dead stop while climbing grade.
triple it if being pushed by traffic.

I didn't believe I would ever see anything near that 19.1 again, but
