Theoretically how long will the Prius last?

Certainly will, because air traffic controllers look after those pilots who are unable to fend for themselves. You just don't get service like that on the roads!

 

The hybrid warranty in California is 10 years/150,000 miles. (Sigh).

I've heard that prius' brake pads last over 200,000 miles. Mechanics told me that at 80,000 miles the pads on my 2010 prius were still at 7/10, so projected life sounds about right. My friends Beamer with approx same 80k miles just replaced his brakes to the tune of $800. Per each wheel! He kept repeating "don't say I told you so". I did not say a word. (Smiled)

 

Correct. The hybrid battery warranty in CA is 120 months/150,000 miles, part of the California Emission Control Warranty. Performance or Defects are covered for 180/150.

I'd had a Mazda 6 that had an air vent under the steering column which was very handy for dispersing malodors! Made it fairly easy to shift the blame, (amongst other things)!

 

How long will the Prius last? Hmm, hard to say. Of course, it depends. However, I think there are a lot of things one can consider that might help determine how long your prius will last.

What climate do you live in? Do you service the car regularly? Will you or have you had any accidents? Do you have to climb mountains everyday? Do you live in a hot climate? Do you drive fast or floor the accelerator all the time?

I'd say those questions might have a pretty good indicator on how long the car will last. I think they're valid for most cars. Likewise, doesn't mean you won't get a hold of a lemon. Had a Prius C that had to have the top half of the engine replaced over a small coolant leak... Bought a Dodge Challenger where the transmission blew up the day after buying it new off the lot. Then there's these cars that seemingly last forever.

Fortunately, if your intent is to keep your 4th gen prius on the road as long as possible, more than likely by the time problems occur replacement parts that would be expensive, inverter, transaxle, motor/generator, etc will more easily be found from salvaged or wrecked vehicles, used parts, etc.

 

Seeing a car - driving slowly on the motorway recently had me thinking, I wonder if it is possible that a PRIUS Gen 4 could possibly still be on the road in 90 years? It was an AUSTIN 7, I guess late 1920s, looked a bit like this:

 

Most people would not recognize Gen1 as a Prius. Gen 2 has what people think of as the classic Prius shape.

 

Personally I have only seen one I recognized. It was in a parking lot and the Prius badges gave it away.

 

I know my salesman still has his Gen 1.

 

Gen 1 was never officially sold here - grey imports. I occasionally see them around - there is a 2002 Gen for sale at the moment on CarSales - only one in the country.

 

Ah, yes! I have driven one of those my old boss' brother had on the works yard. It had a button accelerator pedal situated between the clutch and the brake pedals.

I don't recall the pedals reversed (sort of like a Model T but different), I thought they were the current layout. A friend (haven't seen him for a decade) has one, early model, and he says that it's "difficult" to drive - mainly because the brakes are very ... poor, handbrake only on the front, footbrake only on the rear (or is it around the other way?). I think the later ones (like this RUBY have better brakes, as they're coupled together. And it hasn't the power to keep up with modern traffic.

 

I have seen several Gen 1 Prius in my area which is quite rural and typically filled with pickup trucks. One day, seen 3 which was shocking. My guess is that both Gen 1 and Gen 2 will be the collector's choice.. Gen 1 for being, of course, the first and Gen 2 since everyone had one.

Personally I wouldn't mind having a Hudson Hornet but I'll keep dreaming.

 

I’m at 92,000 miles (all highway) on my 2016 Prius 2 Eco (lithium ion battery). No issues. Fuel economy is very consistent for me with no degradation over time, which I interpret as meaning the battery is fine. I get the usual seasonal variations in fuel economy, and I took a 3 mpg hit after installing different tires at 45,000 miles, but that’s it. Mine appears to be holding up just fine.

I had forgotten that CA has a 150,000 mile battery warranty...thanks for the reminder!
