    Hey everyone,
I know this has probably already been answered, but I couldn't find it. If I use the heat, the ICE kicks on, and if I use the seat heaters, the electricity is being used. What about the front defogger and rear defogger? I know I read to put the temperature on low and then defrost the windshield without the ICE coming on, but when I have it in low and push the defrost button the ICE does come on. Does this mean that the front defrost is run by gas and the rear by electric? or are they both run by the ICE? Thanks!

    1. Yes
    2. I'm not sure on the rear, someone else will have to chime in.
I have never used my rear defrost but it is all electric.

rear does not kick the ice. front does because it calls for warm air.

Ok, so if I put the climate control on low and just put the fan on, the ICE shouldn't kick in? What temp does low represent? I know this morning it was 3F outside so Im sure any temp above the outside will cause the Ice to go on right? If this is true, would the ICE kick in when the climate control is set to low, but the outside temp is less than say 64F? I say 64F because I think I saw low come on just after 65F on the control.

If the battery is too cold, the engine will fire up.

The temps & speeds vary too.

correct. low represents off, so. it never kicks the ice on. there are many other reasons it will come on tho, so, we can only do so much to prevent it. i think the faq covers this.

If I have a PiP can I keep it outside and charge it outside, or must I park it in a garage? Can the charging connection withstand rain, snow, sleet etc.?

I've been charging at work through rain, snow, and nasty Minnesota extreme cold for 2 years now. It's a non-issue. The design is well thought out.

Thank you so much for this forum! My husband and I just purchased our first Prius (2014 PiP) yesterday so we have a lot to learn! I'm looking forward to seeing how efficient I can drive it to maximize EV mode. I'll be reading a lot here...

Does the PIP have less interior room than the regular Prius (besides having no room for a spare tire)?

ok guys..what is ICE? Not a car guy + new pip owner. I know it stands for internal combustion chamber, but what's that? what does it do? how does it affect our mpg? battery? I read a lot of it being kicked in and out...how do I know when it's on or off? what are the benefits/what should I aim for? Sounds like most people prefer it off than on? yea sorry...thanks.

Internal Combustion Engine. In this context, it is the gasoline-powered engine that cars traditionally have had. The Diesel engines in big trucks are a different kind of internal combustion engine. The term means that it is a power source where the energy is derived by burning fuel in the engine. The term was originally in contrast to the steam engine, where the fuel is burned externally to the engine.
