OK I'm offically jealous. Is the AR-15 the thin of thick barrel?

Thats a nice looking revolver .44 magnums are fun but I like my M1911 .45 ACP. I guess standing isn't too bad at the range you are shooting, my Romanian PSL is almost too heavy to shoot while standing.

Yeah even my wife liked it. Took her shooting a couple days aftrward and set up postol targets at appox. 30 ft she had a bullseye on the second shot. Took me 6 shoots  Guess I won't be giving her a hard time at the shooting range.

It's a Colt MT6601(?). I forget the exact nomenclature. It's a POS. I should have bought a Bushmaster. Much better weapon for half the price. At the time I knew nothing about civilian weapons. I bought the thing so that I could improve my marksmanship (I was in the Army at the time). It definitely helped with my shooting. My accuracy was much improved, though my eyesight went down the toilet so I can't hit (see) the 300m targets anymore w/o glasses on.

One of my friends has a Barrett .50 cal semi-auto sniper rifle. The thing is absolutely insane. I couldn't help myself; I laughed hysterically the first time I fired it. It sounds like a small cannon, and the blow-back from the muzzle brake is incredible.

The discussion wasn't really about the Prius, it just got mentioned in passing in a discussion about what new car to get. I'm pretty sure something bigger got bought by the person who started the thread. :)

My first exposure to the M16/AR15 was my stint in the Utah National Guard. From that I learned to distrust gas operated weapons, unless you are maniacal about how often you disassemble and clean.

If you're trying to find an accurate and reliable 7.62mm (.308 Winchester) weapon, try to pick up an HK 91. It's a German built high quality semi-auto rifle, and uses double roller lock operating. Extremely simple to take apart and clean, although the operating bolt is a bit of a mystery to most folks who want to take it apart.

Hint: twist the head and pull, the head comes off, the firing pin and spring are then easy to clean. Also very easy to clean the rollers in the head.

My Dad had one for a few years before my folks sold their home in Utah and moved to Canada. With iron sights, the HK91 is very accurate, with a scope you can't miss. About the only bug is if you NEVER clean the weapon, eventually enough crud builds up in the receiver that the weapon will stovepipe. That only happens if you NEVER clean it.

I know a few folks in Utah who own them. About the only use for such a heavy caliber is to lug blown V8 motors into the desert, then pop away at them with the .50. Very very impressive the damage a .50 will do to a small block Chevy. Very expensive thrills too, around $2.50 a boom.

The .50 would be completely useless for hunting, as it would just punch through whatever you shot. I prefer no larger than .308 for hunting, perhaps 30-06 for moose. Unless Jurassic Park becomes a reality, then you'd need the .50.

HK makes nice stuff. FN seems to do a good job as well (they've done a nice job with the M16). I've had 1 misfire on an M16A2 and that was in basic. It's a great weapon in my opinion. The real problem of late is the green tip ammo, which just tends to go straight through stuff. The 7.62x51s are great but the ammo load is lower and the magazines are smaller.

Anyone that doesn't clean their weapon should expect a stovepipe. Might knock some sense into them.

I am very maniacal about cleaning my guns. I clean them even if I only fire a single shot and thats not just if I'm shooting the corrosive ammunition.

Wow. It's sort of scary to see so many gun fanatics here. I have never even seen a gun in person much less held one.

The last sentence is the explaination for the reason you find it scary.

Guns are not the least big scary. They're far less deadly and kill fewer people each year than cars and tend to be operated by people much better qualified to handle them than cars.

Guns are tools. Tools can be used in postive ways (food gathering) or nefarious ways (the thing that many people equate guns with). But think of them as knives. We could hardly have food on our plates of any kind without a knife, and yet knives are also used to kill.

Now, some folks really get kinda 'goofy' and develop an attachement to guns as a sort of hobby, but that's little different than some folks obsession with cars, motorcycles or anything else.

I'd encourage you to find a place to learn a little more about guns, a little knowledge will go a long way toward dispelling your fear.

Agreed. If there are this many gun worshippers among Prius owners, can you imagine the rate among Hummer owners? I would never have a gun in my house. It would be like having an armed grenade around. The statistics prove that a gun in the house is far more likely to be used in a suicide, domestic killing or accident than in defending yourself from an intruder.

And it's far more likely it'll be used in none of those ways.

Agreed. It will probably just sit there gathering dust. So why have one? And in the very unlikely chance that it will be fired, as I said, it will probably be in an accident (maybe with a kid), or a suicide or a domestic murder. That is the reality.

Clearly you're not from my part of the country. Guns are used on a several times/month basis around these parts and rarely just "gather dust".

In homes where they're not needed they shouldn't be kept...with that I agree with you. People who don't learn how to properly use them, store and lock them shouldn't have them. But the 'fanatics' here clearly do know those things. Every gun in my home has a lock...I have 3 kids in my house and am an ER doc married to a pediatrician. I think we're as or more aware of the risks than the average soul. Particularly someone who has no familiarity with guns futher than what they hear on the evening news or in a magazine article from the Sunday paper.

Guns used several times a month? I have no problem with that at all if it is for hunting animals for food. I am no vegetarian. But I would look pretty silly roaming the suburbs of Long Island for game. Easier to head for the nearest supermarket. But hunting for "sport" where the animal is left to rot - that is wrong.
