Haven't tried it but what about covering a cardboard box with aluminum foil then driving into it?

I'd be believing the EURO NCAP test rather than a makeshift cardboard box with foil. Or TOYOTA who would have extensively tested it in ways you just couldn't yourself. The chances of the box damaging your car are more than I'd risk.

You could then cover the whole lot in bubble wrap and protect the car and the car-dboard! :ROFLMAO:

    Aluminum foil may actually work.

Also put two wrenches in your pocket:LOL::ROFLMAO:

What is weird is that the back up warning for a pedestrian actually worked at the dealer with a fat salesman behind the car.

I wouldn't suggest ramming it at high speed but a low speed encounter shouldn't do any damage. BTW I accidentally tested mine one day when I slipped off the brake trying to grab my cell phone from my back pocket. It felt like I'd hit the car in front of me and the warning sounded. When the car pulled away there was no damage because there had been no contact!

I've had MANY pedestrians set off the "cross traffic" alarm by walking behind me!

RCTA works great. Especially with kids biking and walking around where you are backing up. First comes the RCTA alert, then comes the kid on the visual sensor.:)

Strange thing happened on the way to the Roman Forum.

So I was cruising through an intersection and an idiot in the turn lane decided to turn instantly in front of me. I put on the breaks firm and then hard but no locked wheels. Felt like the car was doing something as it stopped inches from the car in front of me. My wife and I did not think to look at the dash as we were breathless to say the least. Also no audio warning that I could tell. Really thought we would hit the car. So I can't say for sure if the auto stop worked or not. I think it at least assisted but not sure what happened.

Those touring tires sure grip the road like Polar bear paws.

My other touring had a strange rattle on start up in the parking lot one day after the car was moving for a few seconds. Sounded like loose parts on the back side of the engine.

Probably go out and make sure the PCS is turned on.

OK, checked my settings and the PCS (not PCP) was not set on maximum distance. Checking the other car today.

Ok So I am wrong as usual. It will not detect until you put it into reverse. My wife is pissed BTW. It will detect her in reverse all around most of the car but not the front. Also if she is standing still behind the car it will detect her at about 18" as I am backing up. No early warning on stationary pedestrians.

I think in park it will detect her in front of the car.

[You have edited since I started replying ...]

Do note that RCTA is meant to warn of approaching vehicles outside of your eyeball and backup camera views. It is not meant for pedestrians standing or children playing back there, those still demand the same old pre-RCTA measures.

That's what I remember but I thought I would check it again today.

So children are still a big issue.

I assume auto stop does not work backing up??????????

Good point, does auto stop use regen braking or does it apply the friction brakes and does regen braking work when backing up ?

Autostop does work in reverse. I have seen a better Toyota video, but can't find it at the moment, but you see it in action in the clip below.

    EDIT - Found it

Think that is for parking but who would ever know. Does it work in non parking mode?

My wife refuses to get run over.

    Edit function broke.

    Yes it does. Very effective.
Almost feels like you've actually hit something; but when you get out and look, you still have a few inches of clearance to spare.

Thanks, checked the forward stop today by setting the distance to max and watching the warning indicators. Brakes slammed on at around 18-24".
