Finally!! Real world efficiency numbers for the EV6/Ioniq 5. I know the Ioniq 5 isn't quite as efficient, but that's encouraging to see now that I've decided on the Ioniq 5. I usually get 5-5.8 in my Prime.

Keep in mind that highway efficiency drops towards 3.0 mi/kWh. (3.5 for a summer day dry roads and close to 3.0-3.1 if it's 40-50°F with rain and wet roads)

My mistake. Did the gen 2 still have that aggravating engine warm up that kept the ICE running for the first X minutes whether you needed it or not?

Elaborate please? Is it 5 minutes with an electric block heater? Or are you saying that it keeps the engine on for 5 minutes to act as a block heater.

Sorry about that, no I meant when the block heater is activated 45 minutes to an hour prior to departure and the temperature is no lower than 30° Fahrenheit it would take 5 minutes for the engine to finish its warm up cycle

But you still needed to come to a complete stop and let the engine shut down before it would shut off with accelerator lift-off in subsequent driving.

So, regardless of the model, it appears that they staged a "run off" that negated (in the short term) all the advantages of a hybrid system and (through drafting and steady speed) gave advantages to the BMW.

At least it's nice to see that the top gear folks learned enough about the design to know it's flaws and benefits.

I doubt it. It’s a really really old episode ( some 17 years) and Clarkson is a renown Prius Hater. Ignore it and move on.

I don't know the back story about who Clarkson is. And to be honest, I really don't care what he hates or like. But pertinent to this thread, the comment he makes nails it. Toward the end of the video when MC asks "If you want an economical car, then drive BMW, not Prius?" His reply was "No that is not what I am saying. What I am saying is It isn't what you drive that matters. It's how you drive it. That is everything." I completely agree with that statement.

Ok I’m off to get that 6 litre Corvette Stingray to see if I can get 70mpg.
Of course what you drive has an impact on your fuel economy lol.

When you do, make sure to film it and upload the result on YouTube. ;)

I suspect, doing 70mpg on Corvette is going to be far more difficult than doing 17mpg on Prius. So, if you succeed, it will go viral. I guarantee!

It's not hard to get 70 MPG in a Corvette. A long down hill stretch such as west bound I-80 coming down from Truckee should allow that... for a short time. There are mile after mile of 6% down slope along that stretch. I have pictures of my 2002 Prius displaying 30 minutes straight of 100 mpg while going through that area.

For those people who don’t know who Clarkson is…
Here is a you tube compilation explaining why he is such a Prius hater.

Even in a 1969 Corvette Stingray?

Probably, if it coasts well in neutral:

If you want to really stack the deck, do what the hypermilers would do. Over inflate the tires. Draft another vehicle. Don't worry about MPH since you can easily trade altitude for speed once you reach the top of the next rise.

It's worth noting that the Top Gear video was not two cars racing. One was following another, and while the lead car set the pace, the follower was free to coast or accelerate at will.
