The NYT reports on the beginning of Elon's trial for the "funding secured" comment that could cost billions. Judge has already issued a preliminary ruling not favorable to Musk on the two most common defenses to the allegations and Elon's legal team has had to drop a subpoena for a person claimed to be the source of the expected funding. Not to mention several others court cases (SEC agreement and compensation package come to mind.

Maybe he'll learn speak factually and not aspirationally. At the cost of billions.

Tesla has not been shy about ‘giving away’ advantages to further their mission statement.
And the offer to open the supercharger network has been there for years.
Until now, no one except Aptera has taken them up on the offer. With some help from the government, Tesla can now expand faster.

 

I wonder how will Tesla owners will feel when they pull into a charging station and some other brand just took the last charger? Most people fuss when they have to wait for 3 minutes for some gas pump to be available. Will selfishness or altruism be their first thought.

 

Most likely (but we will have to see) Tesla will install groups of 4 Superchargers with CCS cables at locations that have a relatively large number of chargers already, like 10 - 20 or more. These popular locations for Teslas will also likely be popular for other brands.
Maybe we will see these stalls have both cable types.
Tesla knows which locations get full most often and when. They can plan for these to get expanded beyond the CCS chargers as well.

I've never had to wait at a Supercharger. As long as the non-Tesla cars have to pay extra per kwh or some type of signup fee or monthly fee I have no problem with it.

Why is that Mike? I've heard similar sentiments from several Tesla owners, and none have had an explanation that made sense.

That's what I don't understand. If you believe that driving an EV will save the planet, shouldn't you be trying to remove impediments to EV drivers, regardless of the EV manufacturer? Adding a fee or a surcharge would only result in disenfranchising some people and put more money in the Tesla coffers. That sounds like it's against the tesla Mission, as quoted here frequently.

I see. I guess I should not have believed so many posts about how tesla makes more profit per car than any other manufacturer. I did not know that they were hurting for cash.

 

Don't other charger networks have membership plans where you pay a fee to have lower charging rate? Tesla charging other brand cars more at Superchargers is just them having a membership program where the fee is having one of their cars. It was revenue from selling the car that paid for the charger.

Tesla may not charge more for others. No details yet.

People also fuss if somebody grabs a parking spot that they feel 'entitled' to - when they feel they got there at the same time or slightly before the other. Heck - even at a grocery store line that indignance happens (unless it's a fit 21yr old wearing tight yoga pants jumping in front of you). Why do you care about the Tesla driver's feelings or why should they be any different.
DeCaprio might buy a Prius to virtue signal - but that's not the case with most people that do something like buy a car.

I can see the motivation for Tesla to espouse a mission statement that draws investors and customers while doing the opposite. I can't see the motivation for the customers to do the same.

 

i can't speak for mike, but if i owned a tesla, i wouldn't want them opening the chargers to non tesla cars, as it just makes everything less accessible for me.
i would reluctantly consent if they paid more, but only as a second best option.

altruism is great, and if i thought opening the chargers would increase ev uptake, and if i thought ev uptake was the answer to all of our problems, i might go along with the program
