    Not at all.
However, they did see that in order for BEVs to be more successful than a second car for the commute, a fast charging network was needed. There wasn't one, and the available DC charging standard was too slow, so they designed their own standard, and built their own network of chargers.

Toyota and the others are playing the "we are car companies, not energy companies" card when asked to build hydrogen stations. Something that is absolutely needed for them to even have a chance to sell these cars. Hydrogen is in no way similar to gasoline in the early days of the automobile. Back then, gasoline was a by-product of the petroleum industry. It was only being used for cleaning and degreasing. It was cheap and available in every store, which is why engine makers chose it for fuel.

Hydrogen has to be made, and it takes effort to get it to a form where it is usable for a vehicle fuel. Early engines weren't picky about gasoline quality, but PEM fuel cells are. Hydrogen stations aren't going to just happen like gasoline ones did. Even without competition from ICE cars. Toyota et al. act like it will while they lobby governments to spend tax dollars putting the stations in. The Japanese government had enough, and forced them into paying some of the cost there.

So just offering a hydrogen car for sale isn't going to be enough for their success, and I doubt a company's sincerity if that is all they do.
