I can appreciate the constant stream of improvement but it begs a question. How does Tesla deal with out of date parts that fail and are not in inventory or manufacture?

Do they ever take a car back to 'remanufacture'?

If they update the cars every week, keeping track of service parts will be/is a nightmare. It sounds like the Model S is a very expensive throw-away product.

Tesla engineers make updates as they discover better ways to do things. Many of these changes are minor, some are not.
I do not know the specifics of how these are done or how difficult it is for them to keep track of.
I do know the results. I have had fewer issues as time goes buy. There has been no increase in my costs.
Tesla's margins on the cars has grown to the mid 20s (excluding the Model 3).

I also know a few of the service guys and have not once heard a complaint about the difficulty of tracking and maintaining this system (I have heard of other complaints).

Tesla does build to order, so their inventory of parts is smaller than most. This may help the issue to not be a challenge. Or, perhaps Tesla has just figured out a better way to do business ;)

It's generally tracked by VIN and/or build date.

Sorry but you are mistaken. Fisker design was to be a Tesla, and when he got fired he took the design with him. Musk had to start over again. The Fisker design is so much better looking, it actually looks like an exotic on the outside and is worth the exotic price tag. Inside is a different story. Both Tesla and Fisker could do much better on the interior designs.

Is Musk really that bad at writing employment contracts and backing up design documents?

Guess so he had to sue Fisker.

    Inaccurate.
Tesla was working with a number of designs.
We shall just have to agree to disagree. It seems obvious to me Tesla wanted a much more functional, clean contemporary styling.
Fisker went ‘all-in’ on styling, at the detriment of functionality, engineering and durability.
Heck, Fisker not only went under, it fired Fisker.

actually - Henrik Fisker beat feat even before the board could fire him. Always looks better to bail out, so you can say you quit, rather than you got your pink slip. Henrik Fisker did have one skill, & that was painting & sculpting pretty car bodies ...
Business Insider gave a decent run down on the fail of Heinrich.
How America's Coolest Automaker Crashed So Hard, So Fast - Business Insider
    Part of the failure was not even needed by Business Insider, but rather simply posting some of the hideous results revealed by consumer reports test drive, trying to get poir Heinrich's pretty car around the track a few times ... from that test their test revealed things like;
    "design flaws... "
    " noisy engine .... "
" lowest rated luxury car of all time .... caused by early track failures ... recurring warning light problems ... its frequent window problems .... dashboard warning lights ... "
    " poor dash controls .... "
    " cramped subcompact interior ... "
"... poor agility ... poor performance ... lacks oomph"
Reminds me of a runners up - MS California i hooked up with, over 2 decades ago .... SOOO very beautiful, but no character - no integrity - no honesty - no substance.
But yes, Heinrich can sculpt you a pretty car.
On a happier note - despite their warts, tesla remains #1 in customer satisfaction.

Did Lutz ever put corvette engines in Fisker gliders?

Lutz's company bought one, for $100k - removed the 2L GM ice, & for the thrifty cost of an additional $100k - he had corvette guts added - v8, tranny & all. He claims it'll do 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds ... only 1½ seconds slower than the stock ludicrous model S P100d - that he could have picked up used, for $86K less than his home made FrankenFisker.
Just goes to prove that the upside of senility is - you don't know that people feel sorry for you.
    On a happier note - 5-star Volvo crash test / simulating a telephone pole-type side impact at speed. 5star rating apparently still means your car can wrap the pole. Compared to the model3 on the right. It shows the battery/frame appears to afford a lot more rigidity;

...but the Fiskette would have more highway range, and can gas up almost anywhere. Still, what's the point?

Maybe just that Lutz can waste perfectly good Vette parts, & put 'em in a crampt sub compact?

That guess seems to be based upon the fact that Tesla took over SolarCity, and the concern that Musk is getting stretched thin between Tesla and SpaceX. SolarCity was already offering onsite batteries before Tesla came out with the Powerwall. Merging to avoid direct competition with each other and increase bargaining strength for the shared components makes sense. Are SpaceX rockets using the same core software for landing as the cars do for autopilot? I don't see the overlap that would make a the merger a benefit to both companies.

Is eliminating the commute between the two companies' headquarters really going to free up enough time for Musk to stay equally focused on both?

I'd be very surprised if it happens. Two VERY different companies.

    Tesla's with rocket range extenders?

I can see there being some overlap between the autopiloting abilities, but the two companies can just sign a limited partnership for that.

Most of that's analyst's reason for the merger is that it would somehow allow Musk to remain focused on Tesla as his attention drifts to SpaceX.
