The government is really lousy at doing it when 1) regulatory agencies are packed with political cronies and/or representatives of the very industries needing regulation; 2) lobbyists are allowed to re-write the regulations themselves.

With the FDA, FTC, FCC and EPA, among others, Bush has overseen the above things and gutted the very intent of the original laws establishing them.

Well I certainly don't trust YOU with the decision to withhold the money or not.

Most of the services that the government provides are truly necessary, and taxes are a necessary evil. The government isn't this well oiled machine like we would all like, but they are serving a purpose, and that won't change any time soon.

Government is the only entity, in a lot of cases, that has the breadth to take care of some of the big and small things that matter in this country.

Only because more people voted in 2004 than ever before.

Truth of the matter is that G. W. Bush had the narrowest winning margin of any incumbent president who won reelection; John Kerry received more votes than any other candidate for president in the history of the Republic save Bush.

You seem to have missed the part about blowing up children and killing their teachers. I don't think that's evil. I KNOW that's evil. That's not my point of view. That's a black and white fact.

I don't think Democrats are evil. Most of the people that live where I live are democrats including everyone in my family. I do stand by what I said. They'll do anything to stay in office. That's why the mayor of New Orleans could organize busses to get the poor to the polls but not to get them away from the hurricane.

He should be impeached. The only ones who can do it are senators, who, themselves, are steeped in Iraqi blood and complicit in the economic rape of the American Middle Class.....so, who's to throw the first stone?

must be nice that you can do that...very tough to do it around here unless you claim its an emergency. getting a checkup just to get a referral to a heart specialist takes 6 weeks. oh but wait... im right NEXT to Canada... that must be the reason

I didn't miss anything you said.

The acts of the terrorists and insurgents are reprehensible and horrific no doubt... but all I am asking you to do is go beyond your visceral gut reaction to horror and your sense of outrage. Think about more than just WHAT happened, but WHY.

Do you think all the insurgents are just insane? Why do they do what they do? Until you can give an answer to that question that's not "they are evil people" then you're not worth talking to.

Or answer this question... why are they evil? It is not an easy question to answer, and one that I don't think you have thought about.

We're not fighting some great crusade here against uncivilized barbarians... these are real people who are against use.

My problem with most Americans nowadays is that they can only see the world from the American filter. Take a sociology class sometime, and realize that there are other ways of looking at the world than your own.

Our current president has made lots of...err...missteps but I'd like to mention the effects of his policies on our military.

A friend of mine, Jim, is a graduate of West Point and a retired Lt. Col (Rangers). He has two sons. One went to West Point and is a surgeon in the Army, the other graduated from the Naval Academy and is an officer in the Marines.

Jim and I have had lots of discussions over the last four years about how to fight terrorism, the limits to military power, invading cities on foreign soil, etc. His views have changed from being a gung-ho supporter of our current Commander-in-Chief to one of head-shaking disbelief. He now says that Bush is a big time screw-up.

Jim's sons (the Marine is currently seving Iraq, after a stint in Afghanistan) will both be leaving the military ASAP. They asked their father if that would be okay with him. He said he would consider them stupid if they did not abandon their careers immediately.

Watching the devastation of his beloved military has saddened Jim. Of course he's proud of his kids and the service they have performed. He's also mad as hell that Bush has messed with the quality of our country's protection. He can't see how that can be recovered and that scares him. That's right, one of our tough old birds is frightened by the hack job done to our military.

You CAN get an appointment, with any doctor you choose, without delay. You just have to pay for it.

Isn't the truth that you are waiting for a referral because your insurance company requires that, and you don't want to pay for the visit yourself? That's your choice, and most people will take that route.

I like the freedom of making that choice. I had to exercise it earlier this year when my wife needed to see a specialist and the insurance said "no". Called him up and explained, got a great discount on the bill, and paid the specialist on the day of the visit. My wife's life was worth more than waiting until symptoms got worse so the referral would go through.

You cannot do that in a "single payer" socialized medicine system ... they fine you and the doctor for going "outside the system".

Yes, they are there for a reason. But out of the other side of your mouth, you complain that our government doesn't "care for it's people" because it doesn't force me to pay for the healthcare of people who made poor decisions and don't want to live with the consequences? So it's ok that you choose to ignore the fact that 98% of what the Federal Government does is unconstitutional because the amendment process was ignored because it's convienent for you to do so?

You can't have it both ways.

No, but Americans used guerilla tactics. The difference is that we had honor and courage. These assholes know that they have ZERO chance against our millitary, even using guerilla tactics. Their only hope is to attack the civilian population to try and drive us out the backdoor way.

However, this is our own fault - the lessons of Vietnam and Somalia are not lost upon these animals.

There's a difference between meddling to protect (i.e. the FDA, FAA, etc) - which I think there should be Constitutional amendments to allow- and meddling to have power or to force some kind of twisted "morality" on me and mine (FBI investigating ACLU, National Security Letters, and everything else Orwellian this administration has done, sodomy laws, war on drugs, etc).

It's only through the efforts of the ACLU that things like Total Informational Awareness and the predecessors to SecureFlight were struck down.

The Government thinks it's the 1950s again. The parallels are amazing - exactly the same, except then it was the Soviets and not the Islamicist animals.

    Congress approved that.

I think you'll find that Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco, along with their bureaucracies, had a greater part in that then you've been led to believe.

Believe it or not, Presidents don't spend money or cut taxes. Congress does.

Was she really a covert agent? I believe there's some question about whether she actually falls into the definition of a covert agent.

Presidents don't create legislation. Congress does.

Please excuse me, but I thought this site was about the Prius. I hear enough garbage about politics and politicians from countless other Blogs where you can vent, I do not need to hear it here.

I think your "Congress does" mantra is disingenuous.

Very little legislation that is INTRODUCED, with no administration backing, by Senators and Representatives, ever gets past committee hearings,if it even goes that far. Most non-administration-backed legislation, indeed, is little more than posturing for the benefit of some constituency, usually the folks back home.

The greatest role of administrations has been to create blocs of supporters, via "majority/minority leaders", "whips", etc., for legislation it favors, often even before it is introduced. THEN it goes through the "sausage-making" process.

Are we out to kill this very useful Prius chat room? How about keeping sex, politics and religion off these pages. I come here for interesting and timely Prius info that probably isn't available elsewhere.
    Thanks

Then make the choice to not read this thread.

Better yet, just stay out of the topic header "Fred's House of Pankcakes".

Suggest you READ the description for the Pancake House.

It's a place where bozos (bozoes?) like me can vent and ruminate while we're waiting to make our next prescient Prius post. :)
