I would be interested in a group buy as well. I don't want to be somebodys first unless they are going to do it for free. But still I wouldn't mind a sun roof especially now that summer will be coming around some time soon. I miss my sunroof.

I'm about to have the same one installed here on Long Island just need
to workout some details with owner and setup date for install .It's closer
than Va and the tech has been doing this for 30 years .:)

    BobbyB,

Would love to hear about the details of your installation after it's done. Especially if there's a happy ending (in which event, I would use your installer on Long Island).

If you haven't done so already, you should read CraigK's thread about his installation of the sunroof. It has lots of good info, advice and photos there.

    Re: Manual Pop-up Sunroof Installed

    "Hi All:

This is my first post. I just joined after having "lurked" for a few weeks looking for info on Sunroofs for Prius. Well, I didn't want to do the full-bore $2000 job, nor even $1000 but just a simple manual pop-up like I had installed myself (DYI) in several previous cars 20-years ago... After looking all over the SF Bay Area for someone to help me out, I found a local upholstery and sunroof shop in Walnut Creek, CA who researched and found a vendor with one model that claimed to work. He just installed it this morning -- $470 total! Genesis Auto Upholstery - Genesis Auto Upholstery - Convertible Top Replacement and Repair Specialist in Contra Costa - (925) 935-3072. Neat job, quick install, professional service. Just what I wanted."

Hey, yet another choice out there. Looks great! I will indeed be calling the place that did it there in CA and inquire about the model number. And to see about having a local place here in PA or the place in Va that is close order it and install.

I too have had several pop-up sunroofs in past vehicles and they are all I am really looking for in the Prii (we've 2 to consider, although word is, hers will get a hole in the roof b-4 mine, ha, ha)

    Thanks for sharing.:)

Good to see you are happy with the sunroof. I know a lot of people love sunroofs and I don't mean to attack that.

I never understood why anyone would want to cut a hole in a perfectly good roof but I didn't pay for it and it isn't in my car. When looking for used cars I avoid cars with sunroofs. I have driven cars with sunroofs and I didn't like all the extra light inside the car. I found reflections on the windows due to more light in the car made it harder to see out of the car.
If I'm never going to have it open no point in cutting open the roof.

I'll just wind the window down.
    End of rant.

    Hi
I think i can help you understand as you open with i never understood.
I speak for my case alone .So here goes my past three cars cars have been and 01 miata,a 03 s2000 and a 06 mx-5 miata .So having a sunroof
is the most i can do with this car .In the day had 280 z t tops 300 z t ops
a 79 celics sunroof. The feeling of a roadster with the top down well it's
one of those things that if you do on a regular day in and out it gets in the blood .
At 52 i'm moving away from a sports car to a seadan that may, in the
long run save more than money .
Your points well taken used car with sunroof beware .Yup i agree if it was 15-20 years ago .Things have changed from the top you would by from J C Wintney and cut a hole and drop it in .I've done it as a kid .
What this does is give me is what i want .The mpg and a compromise to a rag top while helping the cause .I'm hope this helps in your understanding.I'm sure some other people who have had roadsters might put in other words .

    1. tilt up for venting hot air (hot air rises right?)

    2. open for more ventilation. I hate having the wind blow at my face as it is with the window down. Opening the moonroof/sunroof allows me to take in the cool spring/summer temps without the window down

    3. Extra light (but you've said you hated it)

    4. As the name says, it's great for looking up at night or simply looking at things above the car during the day (touring a new city, looking at the skyline esp. if you have a panoramic roof option so that rear passengers can enjoy the view).

CraigK had his installed by Automotive Restyling Concepts in New Hope, Minnesota. They are among the Webasto Minnesota Dealers I linked for you in a prior post. Their telephone is 763-535-2181. Ask for Jeff or Jeremy.

Where I live, some of the best views are overhead: Mountains, cliffs, skyscrapers, the bit of sky between 150' trees, and that little patch of blue sky in an otherwise solid overcast. During the eight months of rain we need every bit of light in our lives we can get - especially when stuck in traffic.:(

I also like to install sunroof on my oldschool ride. Problem is it is hard to find automatic sunroof/moonroof for a Toyota TE27 especially that it is already an old car. But I plan on retrofitting one for my ride, I just don't have the budget for now. lol.

i just bought a 2008 prius , #5 package with dealer installed leather ....the only thing i really miss is not having a sunroof .... i checked out an installer in the Brooklyn ,NY area & he didn't think it was a problem to install the 5300 ...but then i called webasto & they didn't recommend putting one in a prius ... do you have the phone # of your installer ..maybe they have some special means of doing the install ...
    thanks

any information on the structural integrity of the roof during a rollover after cutting a big hole in it? and what about changes to your ins. premium ... the insurer usually likes to know about modifications.

seems like a great deal for 1K! I would have loved to have it as a factory option.

I called two Wabasto installers somewhat in my area in Massachusetts, one said about $1500 plus tax (of course), and the other said it could not be done.

Maybe call Bobbyb's installer in New York? You can make a day trip out of it. Get the sunroof installed for $1100. Catch a Yankee game (but you'll probably have to do it before October lol).

I'm scheduled for Wednesday, May 20, 2009 to have your installer put in a Webasto 5300 ($1295) or 4300 ($1195 -- same unit but without auto-close) on my Prius. Don't like the $150 price increase over what you paid last year for the 5300, so I'll probably go with the 4300.
