I'm so frustrated. Once again Toyota is saying there are two bad battery packs out of 14 in the hybrid battery. They are quoting me 2700 plus tax for the repair. Did they manage to drain the battery during the diagnostic process? They claim this is for sure the issue.

with all these fees and charges you've been paying, you could've bought that new battery and be done with it.

Not sure if they are right, but there's nothing else you can go by, it's their diagnosis of the problem.

    Hard decision to make

Did the $1500 HV battery have a warranty? If so, why not call them and explain that Toyo is saying the battery is bad?

It does - however, what's happening is they're saying my dealership is draining the battery during the diagnostic process with repeated restarts. They've throughly tested each cell and claim it's fine and this is an engine issue.

Basically, I just don't know who to trust. My gut says trust my battery guys because they're really smart, genuine guys and they also run Techstream – (but) at the same time, it is possible the Prius could not like my reconditioned battery.

Toyota refuses to do any other diagnosis until the battery is fixed.

It's a tough call. At this point I'm not really going to get a working car either way without dropping some serious $.

    Life..... (n)

Oh if the car is still not starting, it's not the battery...........even a battery with 2 bad blocks, will start.

Unfortunately it looks like you don't have a competent dealer that can fix your car. It's probably something they want you to stop trying to fix and upgrade to a New Toyota on their lot.

So in this situation, I'm afraid it's time to take your losses and call it quits. Use your funds into getting another car.

I got Toyota to do a little more digging. They claim they smoked the engine for any air leaks and also checked the fuel pressure near the engine. Nothing. I might try going via Toyota Corporate just to see if they will consider a goodwill discount for a new battery. I know I'm way over the threshold, but it's worth a try I guess. Just as one last attempt.

Otherwise... what year / price should I be looking for? I can't go over maybe $5-6k.

Good idea to get Toyota involved, but if they don't help out and you have the funds for the new battery.....get it. But the condition you have to present to Toyota is that if it doesn't fix your problem, they can't charge you for the new battery

I spoke with a Toyota Customer Care rep today, and they're reviewing my case. He said since I've had regular maintenance with them, my case has a small chance...however, it's still very unlikely his manager will be open to doing anything for me since I previously received a goodwill discount for my faulty combo meter which was just outside the warranty window.

(If) this does fix the problem, is there any other preventative maintenance I should have done for the transaxle?

Transaxle maintenance is just a drain and fill of WS fluid. Nothing else you can do

If Toyota doesn't agree to the "I'm not paying if the battery is not the problem", then you shouldn't get the battery

Well, they offered me a 20% goodwill discount off the battery. They said they have seen a lot of cars come in with this same issue and it was due to the aftermarket battery, including a couple from Best Hybrid Batteries. They seem very certain that is the cause.

This tough decision is for you to make but my opinion is even with the new battery your car will not start

There's something very strange but your situation where one or more mechanic is not telling the truth. I personally would not invest any more money into this car

This is looking more and more like an ECU problem

Maybe these guys have some ideas

I agree. Everyone is pointing fingers at each other. I lean towards trusting Toyota, but on the other hand, they just want me to buy a new car from them.

Not sure if your @mentions linked correctly :)

I agree with JC. The hybrid battery is not what's keeping the car from running. There is something in the fuel-air delivery that is not right and none of the mechanics can figure it out. I'm sure at this point they have run the hybrid battery all the way down and it can't even spin the motor anymore. I have seen this engine failed to start (P3190) situation at least 30 times and it's always been a piece of trash in the MAF sensor. I know it was cleaned, have any of the mechanics tried replacing it?

Yes –– my first mechanic replaced the MAF sensor, but it didn't change anything. They did clean the throttle body, but did not try replacing that.

    My comments are:

    1. It was a big mistake for the OP to have replaced the traction battery with a "remanufactured" battery. Do not confuse a long warranty term with actual product quality.
    2. Any time that a Toyota dealer is aware of aftermarket parts being installed, and there is the slightest possibility that those parts are contributing to the problem, they will require that those parts be removed and replaced with the correct Toyota parts. So there is no surprise that the OP's dealer is asking for the traction battery to be replaced.
    3. I am sure that the dealer is not going to accept the proposed condition that the OP will not pay for the traction battery repair should it be found that the car is not functioning post-repair. This is what you call "time and materials" service. There is no guarantee that the recommended repair actually will repair the car. If you want guarantees you need an extended service warranty.
    4. OP says he does not have a garage and after 138 posts he is no closer to having the car running than at his original post #1.
    5. If the OP is not able to perform basic engine checks like how to determine fuel line pressure (s/b 43 psi minimum), the presence of spark at the spark plugs when trying to start the engine, etc. then it sounds like he should give up and move on - since he does not seem to be able to find independent servicers who have the ability to do those basic checks for him.

Sorry that I cannot be more helpful here, that was why I did not post earlier.

Maybe @3prongpaul can add something to this difficult diagnosis/repair?
