Sudden loss of power, Red Triangle, Won't Start + P3190

    I think it's time for professional diagnostics. Isn't it like 0 degrees there?

    Battery was free, but I payed for the tech to come service it. Yes, it's very cold right now..polar vortex or whatever they call it. What do you estimate Toyota will charge me for a fuel pump or fuel injector repair? This is what you originally suspected was the issue I believe.

    Yes I would recommend you towing it to someone more qualified than your current mechanic. They will charge you an initial diagnostic fee (1 or 2 hours of labor at approximately $120/hr.). Then if they need more time, they will call you for an authorization for more time to diagnose. After they find the problem, you have your choice to fix it yourself or fix it with them. They would advise you of the cost.

    Going to the dealer is never cheap, but unless there's a qualified mechanic you can go to, you're stuck with that option (or sell the car). The Prius was designed to go about 180k miles problem free. Then it's a roll of the dice....

    I would normally enjoy working on my cars, but with a polar vortex....I'll probably leave it to someone else to freeze them butt off.

    Ha. Yeah sometimes I ask myself why I live here. The road salt kills our cars, too.

    Anyway...yes I'm at 170k-ish. If I can diagnose the issue with Techstream, they would do the repair for me. They just don't have the right tools to diagnose it. I'm surprised they don't have Techstream with the amount of Toyota cars they service... grr.

    The dealer charges more because they have the specific tools and training (or should have them) to get it back on the road. It's like the old joke of the mechanic who charged $100 and all he did was tap something with a hammer. When questioned about the high hourly rate, he said it was $5 for the tap with the hammer and $95 for the experience to know where to tap and how hard.

    Independent shops can't afford brand specific equipment like Techstream because it's several thousand dollars per brand for legitimate copies.

    Techstream reads and provides you with fault codes. It doesn't really tell you what to do with them. But then you can use the fault codes and log onto techinfo.toyota.com for further help

    Alright so Toyota says the hybrid battery needs to be replaced and there's an engine coolant leak. That's it. ....I just had the battery replaced, and the car still wouldn't run. Best Hybrid guys stand behind their batteries so I'm a little skeptical that is actually the issue. Not sure what to do. Really my only option is to have it replaced I suppose.

    If the battery was assembled from random used cells or they simply replaced one or a few bad cells, it was bound to fail before too long.

    Did they say where the coolant leak was. That'll make a big difference in repair costs.

    The battery installed by Best Hybrid is a remanufactured battery. The water pump is leaking coolant.

    This whole process has been such a headache mostly because I'm trying to discern who to listen to, and I feel like I keep making the wrong decisions. I just can't seem to win. I have so many different opinions coming at me from every direction and I don't know who to trust.

    Toyota is telling me to pay $2700 and replace the HV. They don't really seem to be digging deep; they're just addressing the drained battery and think that will fix it. Best Hybrid Batteries advised me to bring the car to them for repair, since they deal with these issues all the time, apparently. They said they have a checklist of items they go through to verify the root of the problem. They are really genuine guys, but I'm still worried about my battery failing me down the road. They claim it should last at least five years.

    I can try to get Toyota to lower the battery cost for me, but at 175k I'm far past the point of a goodwill discount. Or, I can ask them if the battery doesn't fix the issue, not to charge me for it.

    Out of everyone I've talked to, I trust this community the MOST. None of you are after my business; you're just purely here to help others out and share your learnings... and I really appreciate each of you.

    Unfortunately, all the money I've saved on gas has now gone right back into repairs...if not even more:mad:.

    you really have no choice at the point but to go back to best hybrid.

    reman batteries can last quite a few years, or can fail as you're driving home. only a new battery has a really good chance of lasting a long time.

    as far as the water pump is concerned, it's not an issue right now unless it is puddling under the car or draining quickly while driving.

    First code sent was cylinder misfire so i replaced spark plugs(mine were burnt out) that code cleared and a code for air filter came up so i replaced the air filter. Now only code is P3190.. The MAF and throttle were both cleaned.. Filled gas tank as weel and checked oil.

    Right. So the 3 year warranty is great...IF I'm nearby when it fails again. So I can try to negotiate with Toyota about getting the price down, but they are pretty hard to get anywhere with unless I go via corporate which takes some time.

    Originally, one of the reasons I got a remanufactured battery was because I was only planning on keeping this car maybe another 3-4 years max. It already has 175k and I purchased it for $6,000 in Atlanta, so there's no road salt damage.

    And yeah, I haven't noticed any puddling.
