Stolen catalytic converter in london uk

Hi I had my cat stolen from my Prius plus I have reported it to insurance sent the estimate from Toyota as insurance told me to get the quote from garage but still waiting to hear from my insurance was wondering if your insurance went up considerably or 5-10% up? I also have no claims protected.

 

Not London - I'm out in Berkshire - and have had my catalytic converter stolen sometime over the last couple of weeks. (Discovered Saturday but hadn't used the car for 2 weeks before then.) In the process of getting a replacement lined up; haven't spoken to the insurance yet (I'm not intending to claim as long as the rest of the car hasn't been damaged).


Anyway, having read a decent amount of this thread, heard that that newer catalytic converters don't contain as much of the precious metal as the older ones and hence aren't worth stealing, and (here's might be the obvious possible flaw) assuming that newer converters' performance is similar to the old ones, I present to the world a business plan to fix the issue (most easily taken up by Toyota, but an enterprising third party might make it work):

Toyota should Issue a recall (or a third party could offer a free of charge swap) to remove the old converter and swap it for a newer, not-worth-stealing replacement/aftermarket part. It's free of charge to the owner - Toyota / the third party can pay for the scheme with the profits from the precious metals they recover.

I can't see Toyota using excessive amounts of precious metals. Maybe the regs were different when those cars were built, and/or the Tech wasn't as advanced, required more precious metals?

 

The main problem being. The cretinous (thick as pig shit) morons who carry out this thieving crime will steal them anyway. They're so stupid that they will saw them off and decide later if they are worth anything.

 

Yes absolutely my Toyota Prius plus is 2014 model but still they stole it.

 

This is the reason why I installed an over engineered custom protection system on my G2 TSpirit in London UK, to protect my non-OEM replacement catalytic converter.

The UK is over subscribed with brainless moronic catalytic converter thieves with the IQ of a retarded potato.

These greedy “bleep”-holes will cheerfully inflict damage on any unprotected Prius because they lack the prerequisite intelligence to differentiate between an OEM and non-OEM cat.

Protect yourself from these thick as pig-shit idiots by installing the best protection you can afford. And a strong baseball bat behind the front door in case they still turn up on your front drive afterwards (to molest your Prius).

I’ve been lucky so far. I’m sure they’ve targeted me a few times since, but they’ve on most occasions walked away angrily at seeing the overkill protection under “The Spaceship”.

One of these days, they’ll puncture all my tyres for upsetting their feeble thieving minds for wasting their time with top notch protection.

Got my prius plus back from main dealer (Jemca group) yesterday 12th November all done within 2 days car was towed on 10th of November now it’s been fitted with new cat and catloc, catloc scraps on humps almost 90% of times just going to have to get used to it if it deters thieves.
Will wait and see how much my premium goes up after 6 months When it’s due,will update once I find out.

 

Would it be possible on a prius to delete the cat and somehow tune out the sensor via a computer so that there would be no CEL. I know the point of prius is to help the environment, but I only care about saving money on petrol. I'm in the USA and my region doesn't have smog checks.

Seems this crime is spreading to others makes now. A co-worker had his cat stolen from the works carpark last week. The car in question is a Hyundai Sonata on a 2005 plate. Not sure if it is petrol of diesel - but a hybrid it definitely is not. Not sure if this model is susceptible, but he tells me he knows of other Sonatas that have suffered the same fate.

These moron thieves are even more stupid than I thought.

I don't know if they would fit (and wonder if they would work well), but Walker has CA CARB catalysts listed for a 1.8 L Corolla (universal type). I know the EO# is vehicle specific but performance wise shouldn't this be good enough? (Since they were good enough to be stamped with their EO#s).

this has been happening all to often over here in California. Started about 10 years ago. One would not think there would be enough platinum to really make it worth it. But I guess I am wrong.

 

Does anyone know if the newer Gen 4 2016 onwards prius are vulnerable to catalytic converter theft?

Im thinking of getting a newer prius or perhaps just go for the skoda octavia instead

I have heard of two separate thefts in the last week locally. Both neighbours of mine. Both from the drive outside their homes. One at 2am which was unsuccessful as the owner came out. The second was successful. 1 o clock in the afternoon. The owner startled them but was threatened with a knife.

The difference being - the police DID attend both. This is significant. They usually spit a crime number out and basically tell us to piss off.

Maybe the message is getting through to the police now. I sincerely hope so.

“The Spaceship” just spent one month parked in the street in front of my house, while I was at home self-isolating and working from home (before subsequently developing coronavirus and ending up in hospital, but I digress).
The Spaceship seems to have survived barely moving for a whole month without being molested by catalytic converter thieves so far.

No doubt, the extreme custom cage built around a non-OEM Klarius catalytic converter AND the 24/7 recording Thinkware F800 Pro dual dash cam system (powered by an auxiliary 36 hour Cellink Neo6 battery system in parking mode) must have put them off.

I have no doubts that the vehicle has been doubtlessly visited by these thieves, especially in the numerous hospital car parks I’ve visited over the last few months.
They’ll have peeked under there, seen the over engineered custom cat shielding, and left.

The really smart ones marauding at night would have spotted the “Cylon Style” LEDs in the windscreen, indicating that touching the vehicle will likely set off a god awfully loud alarm, and bring the neighbours converging on them with burning torches, sharp pitchforks and baseball bats.

I should note it’s been 2 years since I added my extra shielding modifications, and so far, the vehicle has remained unmolested.

Of course, I count myself very lucky indeed - not smart!
I still recall someone on here (in the UK) who’s Dad had his Prius car disappear completely from the front of his house. Apparently towed away by crooks, the poor Prius 2nd Gen was never seen again. It was parked legally, neither the police nor the local council had towed it. That’s disturbing!

I’ll admit to having repeated nightmares where I look out of the window and “The Spaceship” has disappeared without trace - possibly being towed away by thieves who realised that it had lots of “Millenium Falcon” style enhancements, has been very well taken care of, and was probably worth a lot being broken down into parts, crated abroad and sold as spares!
Yes, that’s my recurring nightmare.

The scary bit is, they’d probably get away with it too - there’s nobody left in the UK to stop them stealing it.
All they need is a big tow truck (or a truck with a hydraulic hoist), the thieves wearing the ubiquitous day glow uniforms and it’s gone!

It’s a shame that the over engineered and ultra reliable Prius 2nd Generation is now disappearing from UK roads, being written off by insurance companies due to catalytic converter theft....

As for the Gen 2 Prius. You're right. I see less and less of them as I drive around London these days. They were once a very popular model seen on every street. But these days they are few and far between. A sad state of affairs for such a wonderful machine.
