Anyone thinking of selling their gen 2 consider this your getting between 50/60 mpg I asked someone with a Hyundai hybrid it has 2 litre engine it also gives same sort of mpg 50/60 you could get the Hyundai but consider the depreciation costs as well.

Yes apparently there is only two places where they can refine this catalytic convertors in the uk there maybe back yard operations but officially there is only two. They would need a lot of skill and effort to separate the different metals iron platinum palladium etc they seem to be shipped off to Europe

They are advertising on Facebook gumtree offering cash for them offering cash is illegal for metal since they were stealing cables and lead off peoples properties so they now only should pay by cheque or card to track payment.

I was thinking of just getting a Gen3 prius but Data Daedalus seems to think that they are not re-targeting Gen2's that have already had the OEM cat stolen. Even the 2011 Lexus is becoming quite affordable now.

I spoke with my insurance company and it will cost me £300 excess to fix it. But my no claim bonus goes down from 13 years to 3 years.

Anybody can advice me how it will affect my insurance renewal in July, obviously it will go up currently paying £365 annually I think, how high it may go.

Is it more worthwhile not to make a claim and get it done for £300-400 as post 369 pointed out above.

    Thanks in advance

Perhaps get a renewal quote with details of one claim and three years of no claims it should give you an idea of what price difference to expect obviously when next year comes a lot of things could change

I was quoted £300 for the entire exhaust to be replaced on my Gen 1. That included the cat.

Is there a difference between the Gen 1 and the Gen 2 exhaust/cat system, or are the aftermarket systems able to be used on both?

Got my prius back from garage, £750 fix, he had another 2 gen2's waiting out back to for the same issue, he said his supplier is out of spare parts now aswell

my prius sounds a bit different and seems to have lost a bit of power and mpg but otherwise appears ok

looks like I am now a statistic. Today in broad daylight my catalytic converter was stolen from my 2008 Prius, from a multi storey car park in Bexleyheath, Kent. The Cat was security marked, and had a tilt motion sensor fitted, last Friday ironically, but the c*nts still stole it. Having to go through the insurance to get it fixed, as the sensor was cut as well which hasn't helped. Will get a cage fitted over the new one, if they steal that as well I'm getting rid of the car.

This makes me so angry; the thieves will also be getting a small amount of money and the owner has to pay huge fees and have their car off the road. The fact that they are targeting cars a second time so they can get another cat is even more disgusting.

I think a cage fitted which is bolted to the bodywork, and can only be removed by unbolting (maybe from inside the car?) would be a good bet. I will be getting a Gen 2 next time I am home (UK) but will have to bear this problem in mind. It would be tempting to re-route the orange wires, but (1) you would be prosecuted for harming the thief, and (2) the wires are not live when the car is off.

If it is possible to get a metal cage that can only be removed by undoing some bolts hidden under the carpet inside the car, that could help (however I bet they could still use the angle grinder or whatever they are using; maybe a cage made using those concrete reinforcement bars??)

Sorry to hear you’ve become a victim too .

Pardon my asking, but, is this the first time you’re being targeted, or the second time?

You said you had your CAT security marked. Was this the original OEM CAT fitted to the vehicle when it was new, or a replacement CAT?
How did you have it security marked, and who did it for you?

What model of tilt sensor did you have installed? Who installed it, and was it connected to your alarm? How much did it cost?

Any CCTV camera footage available from the Bexleyheath multi-storey car park?

Did anybody see anything at all?

    This is very depressing indeed

Thanks in advance for your replies.

Some people on this forum are saying that they are not re-targeting cars that have had the OEM cat stolen but there are reports of owners having it stolen twice.

If word is getting around in the crime world that gen2 prius cats are valuable then more copycat crime gangs will try their luck and youll just end up with gangs everywhere going on a spree to try and make a quick buck.

How do we know the thieves are even checking if the cat is OEM or not. From the videos ive seen they just jack up the car and cut it out within 2 mins.

Its only a matter of time before there is a second wave of stealing replacement cats by copycat thieves in my opinion.

Its been the first time, so guessing original CAT on the car. I done the security marking, stickers on the window as well, Catloc is the kit I used. I had the tilt motion sensor fitted last Friday by a place in Welling, connected to the standard alarm, who showed me it working by jacking the car up, £120 for that. CCTV footage, I'm awaiting the Police to ask the shopping centre to view the footage, security guards weren't bothered to be honest. No one saw anything, even workers who were in the car park resurfacing not that far away. Getting a cage fitted next time, if that gets stolen I'm selling up.
