still astounded by the amount of ignorance and misinformation by anti-hybrid/anti-Prius folks

What I don't understand is why the so-called "greenies" just Looooove their Priuses when the thing actually takes more energy to manufacture than a Hummer!

Yeah yeah, I caught your sarcasm.

The worst part is that I wonder how many people have either avoided hybrids or bought Hummers or other monstrosity class SUVs thinking they are being green  due to the above nonsense.

I don't think anyone ever bought a Suburban Assault Vehicle for the purpose of being green.

" Why get a Prius at 32mpg (real world mileage) when you can get a non-hybrid Diesel VW Jetta at 55-60 mpg?"

In 2004 I'd narrowed it down to those two choices (actually Jetta wagon). I went with the Prius because:

    1. At the time the CPR had banned the sale of diesel cars after 2003
    2. My wife wanted it to be serviced locally and the VW dealer was 20 miles away in the next town; Toyota was downtown just 5 miles from us.

If you drive in such a manner that you get 32 MPG in a Prius, you are not ever going to see 55 MPG in a Jetta!

The American media doesn't deal in facts--it deals in profits.

For democracies to work effectively, the public needs the facts. The American people are not getting the facts--enough. They are being fed misleading information--and the media profits from it.

Ah, that was a quote from cwerdna's post (#40). We average 45 on ours. The car it replaced averaged 25.

When I got my Prius a couple months ago, a gearhead at work asked me (via email) the time from 0-60mph. This of course misses the point of the car entirely. I answered, "60mph? Wow, can it really go that fast?"

Some VW people have this completely alternate reality view of what mileage they can get. I saw a TDI Golf a few days back with a sticker "50 MPG and doesn't need a battery". I have often read this, though, VW owners talking about driving years on end without filling the tank, all rubbish. The thing is rated at 30/42, 1 and 2 respectively better than a gas-only 2011 Elantra. I'm sure it can get 50mpg at 35mph on a flat surface, just as I believe the Prius could get 70 or more in the same condition, and of course no mention of city mileage.

I see a STRONG trend now in all car ads to tout fuel economy, from a Hyundai Tucson to a Cruze to a Durango, most speak to the highway economy. It's disingenuous at very best slapping a huge highway sticker on the windshield.

I honestly in my heart of hearts believe a great many people literally do not know what kind of kick nice person take no names beat your nice person in the mud and laugh at you mileage the Prius can get in the city. It humiliates even the tiniest little subcompact no-horsepower car (at least any sold in north america)

One thing I can glean from some of these posts regarding the general public:
The two most abundant elements in the universe are hydrogen and stupidity!

Just a short time ago, there were NO ads that mentioned fuel economy, other than Prius ads. Everybody else wanted to sell you something that can supposedly drive up a vertical cliff face. (Of course I would yell at the TV telling them they're going the wrong direction with these things.)

Now you don't see Prius ads, since they're selling more than they can make. But there are still big truck and SUV ads that make no mention of MPG. They've built the cars, nobody's buying them, so they have to push hard to sell them.

As far as the car ads that do mention fuel economy, it's laughable when they mention something like 'better than 30MPG.' That should be the gas guzzler end of the spectrum.

if you ever get in argument with sticker owner tell him to pull the battery out and see what MPG he will get out of the tank.

Of course the states love gas guzzlers, and hate Prii, and others that get more than 35 mpg as they lose revenue from the fuel tax. That is why they are starting to slap penalty taxes on cars that get high mileage. So the Feds have their "Gas-Guzzler Tax" and the states will have their "Gas-Sipper Tax"!
