Steering column mod?

Any decent machine shop with fabrication services should be able to machine a splined extension that mates to both the steering wheel and existing shaft. It has to be hollow so that the bolt reaches all the way through. The bolt also need to be replaced with one that is long enough to accommodate the extension.

This is nothing new. Racers install extensions of different lengths exactly the same way. I wouldn't be surprised if there are already extensions that fit. I suspect the splined steering attachment is probably standard as most cars you can by other steering wheels and replace them and the splines just fit.

The question here is how much length is left in the electrical harness? Does anyone know? Can someone check?

In either case, I wouldn't go beyond an inch or two.

 

Extending the spline shaft might be what I need to do? I have a 2006, so how difficult would it be to replace my 2006 steering column with a 2010 Prius telescopic column? Has anyone done it? I don’t want to buy one only to find out that it isn’t manageable.

Has anyone actually extended their steering column yet and on what year Prius?

there might be an intermediate shaft extension like when you add a body lift kit to a 4x4 truck. when i added a 3" body lift to our 96 tacoma, the kit came with the extension. (look up performanceaccessories.com to see a kit for an example) as long and the spline count and diameter were the same, i don't see why you couldn't add one and just adjust the mounting brackets inside the car to accommodate the extension.

You say this like it is a bad thing. Talk to a fireman or EMT who's seen injuries caused by airbags. It'll shut you up real quick...

The further you sit from the airbag, the better. 'Nuff said.
