Standard Prius Prime Charger (G9060-47130) supporting 240V

    For those not comfortable to modify the plug, evdoubler has pretty all pigtail adapter from 240v to 5-15R Nema, cost around $65 on ebay & amazon
    Just search for evdoubler

    I see the last comment here was was in 2021.
    I did some parts research and found that the Cable Assy, Electrical Vehicle Charger (Battery Charging Cable-Toyota (G9060-77130) ) for a 3.3 KW charger may still apply to a 2023&24 Prius Prime XLSE vehicle.
    -
    -Just trying to confirm that somene with a 2023 or 2024 PP XSE also recieved this part number EVSE with their new PP. The part number (SKU number) should be itemized on the black box, an intergal part of the EVSE cable.
    -Has anyone used 240v ac crcuit to energize the 2023/2024 PP XSE toyota EVSE cable ?
    -If yes, how is this 240v mod working for you ?

    I bought a different evse for 2020 Prime, around $100. I put in a duplex outlet, one is 6-20 240 v, the other 120 v. I’m not going to play with my original evse. I got a couple others now. One is a new Chrysler evse from a Pacifica. $100 ebay, Works great on 120, and an aftermarket $100 evse that comes with the 240 plug already. Works on my 240 outlet, 3.3 kw. Works fine all of them.
    All kinds on ebay, Ford, GM, everything. I looked for bargains and had to be new for about $100 including shipping. Toyota one is reserved for the car and 120 only.
    A Prime only needs a level 2, 20 amp 240 v outlet on it’s own circuit to get the max charge. No need to get the overkill Level 2 that go higher than the car will ask for.

    Why would anybody want to Cripple the charge speed on a 2023 or 2024 Prime -when either will accept (6.6kW's) 27.5 amps, which requires a 30 amp breaker.

    You have not answered my question. This makes me wonder if you can afford a 2023/2024 Prius at MSRP. Perhaps not ?
    I'm just asking a simlpe question, and wondering why you belittled me for that ?

    It is my understanding that the battery chargerr in the PP is a max 3.3 KW charger.
    Is this incorrect, is a 6.6 KW charger onboard a 2023/24 PP ?

    A 32amp EVSE requires a 40amp circuit.
    A 24amp EVSE uses a 30amp circuit.

    It's Yea Ol' 80% Continuous Duty Rule

    The prime doesn't pull 32 amps. If you look at the specs it'll show it can only pull 6.6kW's. That's 27.5 amps max.
    Where did you get 32 amps? But yes .... even 26 amps needs a 40 amp breaker for the 100% duty cycle / 80% of load rule .

    Don’t ruin your Toyota supplied charger, evse, $850 list new and $250 or so on ebay. The Chrysler Pacifica one is like $1100 list and I got one for $100. It seems all the oe evse on cars are extremely expensive to buy as a new part.

    And if you live in Québec, beside the $7500 rebate you get for the 2023 model or $5000 for the model earlier to 2023, you also get $600 credit for the purchase of a Levels 2 charger.

    All you need is this 6-20 receptacle for level 2:


    Plus a two pole 20 amp circuit breaker in the panel. You can even use the existing 12 gauge wiring if is on it’s own circuit. The white neutral becomes one of the hots. Then buy an adapter for the car evse, or aftermarket evse with the 6-20 plug ready to go. All done, can’t get any more electricity into the Prius any faster. Best to get an electrician.
    These 240 v outlets are often found for room air conditioners in homes, or in garages.

    If the code still allows it, wrapping a piece of black electrical tape around the end of the neutral white wire was enough back in the days to warn anyone else that it's a live wire now and no longer a neutral.

    I have a couple switches that they use the white as the return hot. Taped black on each end. Pretty common I guess. I got more involved as my box is right next to the panel. I used new piece of 12/3 and this receptacle, in brown as it was cheaper. Even cheaper now. There was a vacant 20 amp two pole but I am replacing it. Always get an electrician though. The evse itself has gfci as I understand and this is strictly for charging. Can go either 240 or 120 charging.

    I should have gotten to the point:

    Having a MacGyver 120V outlet with 240V on it is a potentially dangerous thing to have laying about your garage.

    Example:
    You buy the farm.
    Your wife unplugs the EVSE from the MacGyver to sell it with the car at the estate sale.
    Her Aunt Bea comes over to help clean up your mess.
    She plugs a shop vac into that ordinary looking outlet........

    Moral of the story:
    Get an actual L2 plugged into an actual 240V outlet.
    Be safe and charge at the rated amount.

    Hi , the Prius prime looking at the specs shows it can only pull 3.5kW that is 16amp max so 20amp breaker on a 240V circuit will do the trick including the 80% of load rule.
    notice that the RAV4 Prime does provide an optionnal 6.6kw but not the Prius Prime

    The prongs are different for the 240v, to prevent aunt bea plugging her shop vac in. NEMA design. The 120v half works as safely as any other outlet. Nothing MacGyver about it. That why I posted a picture of it, so people see it, not just written words. UL listed, name brand, blah blah blah. You’ll still say no.

    As for the RAV4 Prime, last I'd checked it came in both flavors, .... the mediocre 6.6kW charge rate (if you want all the most expensive available options), vs the lion's share of rav4's which only had the extra meager 3.3 kw charger.
