did you have any problem lining it up straight and not pointing off center

 

I wondered the same thing, cause half the pics I see look like the shifters aren't straight.

 

They probably installed them at a slight angle to make the switch more comfortable to use from the driver's seat.

 

I agree. It would have been a slightly better design to have the buttons more towards the side, rather than centered along the top, of the unit for better ergonomics. Not a biggie IMO. I will probably try to install straight; if it turns out crooked then I will claim it was done on purpose for ergonomics.

Lol. The good news is that you should be able to reposition fairly easily. If the sticky pads get goobered you can try using double sided tape. My wife has some of the stuff she uses for scrapbooking that I would think would work well. That will be my plan B if perfectionist paranoia sets in.

You mean everyone else didn't sit in the backseat of their Prii with a chalkline tied between the two front door handles so they could snap it and get the shifter centered perfectly? LOL

 

I left off the double-stick tape for now to see exactly where I like it positioned for a long-term test.

If it doesn't move too much I might just leave it untaped.

 

I just completed the install of the carbon fiber w/ green illumination. By far one of the easiest mods to make --- taking just about 5 minutes. Like walterm, I left the double sided sticky pads off. The ESS clicked into placed pretty snugly. I can rotate the unit with a little force, but it still stays in place on its own.

Does anyone else think the green illumination is too bright at night? That would be my only complaint so far. It's definitely brighter than the highest setting on the instrument / switch panel lights. The green color doesn't quite match the rest of the instrument panel, but I think that is due to the brightness.

 

Should have went with the blue one. I think itll be a perfect match if you mod your panel illumination lights to blue as well.

Really nice video, very comprehensive! My only question is wouldn't you put the three nuts back on from the old shifter, so that you don't lose them, even though they would have no functional purpose?

 

great video!!!! i notice you did not use any tape. will the shifter stay in position or will it turn too easily without the tape. also noticed a handle to the right of the install. you arnt running nitreous are you???

Well, I was almost thru typing up my installation experience today.....and then BAM!!! BLUE SCREEN!!! yikes! Anyhow, I'm not retyping all that again. (and that's my story) Anyway, after holding onto my new shifter for about 2 weeks, I finally had a few spare moments to install it earlier. I couldn't get the trim piece off the car just using my hands, so finally got to open up a still-sealed box of dash/interior panels removal tools that I bought over 6 months ago for some other project I had decided I'd try. The dash removal tool I settled on popped it right off. It isn't quite as easy as I had believed, though, from other comments. It WAS my first piece of interior trim that I've ever removed on a car, though, so maybe that's just how hard they generally are to pop off. If so, I can hardly wait to delve into other interior mods! lol.. Another thing, I had three 12mm sockets, and not a single one would fit down onto those three nuts that we have to remove in this shifter modification process. I ended up having to use a 13mm, and it fit perfectly. Take that for what it's worth! Don't know why the 12mm wouldn't fit on mine if that's what other members have indicated that they used on theirs. Leave it to my car to be weird, tho.

 

I did not use the tape either...Better to rotate it when I need it or when I have a large cup in the cup holder.

 

I never even thot about the tape until u just mentioned that. So, no, I didn't use it either! The shifter fits in there snugly anyway.

 

Here's a pic of the interior at night after I swapped out the carbon fiber green with the carbon fiber blue. Stage-10 was great in letting me swap out the units. Just as I did with the green unit, I went without the sticky pads. This one clipped into place just as well as the first one, and can be repositioned with just a little force.

The blue isn't quite as bright as the green, so I'm much happier now. BTW, one of the more challenging mods to get used to after having driven with the standard shifter for so long (8+ years counting the 2004). I have to really concentrate on pushing buttons rather than relying on muscle memory to grab a shift lever. Very cool mod, tho.

 

I am glad you saw the light and came over to the blue team... lol!! I agree with you about having to put conscious thought process into pushing the buttons. I only drive my car maybe 2 days a week, so am especially clueless when I get back into the car for a quick jaunt to town. I'm always like, "Errr, now what am I supposed to push?" lol
