Squeaking sound from wheels during rolling start/Brake Noise (merged)

Mine actually stopped (only heard once) or maybe I'm not hearing it because of my loud musuc/ radio. So when I go to my first oil change next week, I bet dealler can't really do anything about it since it's not making the sqeaking noise now. Or I wonder if it makes the noise after driving on a wet road?

 

I brought in my Toyota Prius for service and told them about the squeaking wheel. They told me that they would have to keep it overnight in order to see whats wrong with it, but I really didn't want to go through that hassle because I'm very busy.

They told me that this isn't the first time they heard someone said that and they said until Toyota has enough complaints/calls about this, then this is just considered "normal" because there hasn't been any bad accidents/problems because of this.

I guess we all need to call Toyota and complain in order for them to start taking actions regarding why our wheel is squeaking at start.

 

The dealership should have offered a loaner for keeping your car overnight. Demand one next time.

Re your last comment: that's why I called the Toyota customer line first rather than the dealership. Everyone experiencing this problem should call Toyota directly and complain.

 

My 2010 III does it -- but so did my 2001 Mazda Protege. I only hear it as I drive in my parking garage. As soon as I drive at road speed and use the brakes, it goes away.

It comes from the slight friction of the pads against the rotors and the larger gap that results after the car has been sitting and everything is cold.

It doesn't indicate a problem.

I took notice of it today when I left for work. It did it in my parking garage. Then as I drove away up the street I heard it (but as I pick up speed I can't hear it anymore.) Then at the end of my block it was gone already. That's been my experience on my Protege as well as the III. One stop from 25mph and it's gone.

Next time it happens to me (only after parked overnight) I'll try pushing on the parking brake a click or two to see if it goes away. That will focus on the noise.

I've just never put any effort into it since I've been hearing it for the last 9 years on my car and it always goes away.

 

I have the same problem w/my prius V with 900 mi. I don't think its the hubcaps because I have the 17 inch alloy wheels w/o hubcaps. I'm going to bring my car to the dealer this week. This is really annoying that I have to take this new car in for service.

 

Yes, Please, EVERYONE WITH THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO CALL TOYOTA OF AMERICA 1ST, not the dealer. The dealer will do nothing if they can't hear the squeaking.
... and not all dealers have loaner programs, so for some of us leaving the car overnight is not an option.

 

This sounds like the way to go:
1st call CustServ, have THEM call your dealer, THEN and only then take your car to that dealer for repairs.

I tested this morning and it's the front brakes. Pushing the parking brake down while moving doesn't make the sound go away... but lightly pushing the brake pedal does. I have a feeling a little anti-squeak spray would fit it right up.

 

My squeak is back, and I told the dealership service advisor.

I may call Toyota again.

So... my squeaking sound went away, and I don't know how it did. It could be one of two things, although I'm leaning towards a specific one...
Recently, after purchasing a tire gauge, measuring the tire pressure and finding it low, I inflated the tires... quite a bit. I'm currently testing the tire pressure at 42/40 to see what kind of mileage figures I'll get. (Personally, I think that pressure is a bit too high, makes the ride a bit harsh, and the car doesn't handle as well... but that can be a different story for a different time.) I don't know if this caused the squeaking to stop or...
This past weekend I attended a wedding that was in the hills around SoCal (if you could call them hills). I didn't drive back down the hill as I had a bit too much to drink, but my wife did... and I don't know if she rode the brakes down the hill (as some people suggested, to scrub the brakes clean). Anyways, the hill wasn't even that steep to have to ride the brakes for any long period of time, but I'm thinking this is what might have "fixed" it.
To test my theory and eliminate one of the variables, I think I'll drop the tire pressure, probably to 38/35 to see what happens... To be continued.

 

Sounds like the braking you did *may* have taken care of it TEMPORARILY. And I stress temporarily.

Did you use the "N" Braking Technique that so many people here on this forum refer to?

I admit that I do the "N" Braking a couple of times a week while on a steep hill and this DOES seem to eliminate the squeaking for a few days -- but the squeaking ALWAYS comes back. You'll see. You are not exempt. The squeaking WILL return. It's like a force majeure!

 

I don't doubt you there friend... I think I'm just overjoyed at the fact that it has squeaked for a whole week now *knock on wood*.
It wasn't me that temporarily fixed it... it was my wife. I was in a drunken stupor in the passenger seat when she drove it. From that night sense, it hasn't squeezed. But I doubt if she used the "N" braking technique though; she's not technical in that sense.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that "squeaks" don't come back.

Good luck with the dealer. My advise is to start at the top and contact Toyota Customer Care, then your dealer. That's what many of us have done. Toyota Corporate needs to know 1st thing. Our hope is for a TSB or better yet, a recall!

I've been to my dealer twice and in both cases the squeak didn't happen.

I'm afraid that a permanent solution will be very expensive.
Since all metal brakediscs do rust a bit, Toyota would have to install ceramic discs.

Google "squeaking disk brakes" or something similar. Seriously doubt it's from rust, and no you don't have to have ceramic disk to not rust. Motorcycles usually have stainless disks because rusty brake disks aren't pretty, but sintered iron is better performance wise.
Has anybody taken their pads out and applied the anti-squeak material to the shims and re-installed? It is real common and has fixed squeaking brakes for me in the past.
I would, but so far my brakes don't squeak, so on my car it wouldn't prove anything.
I don't think the spray would do anything except temporarily, but hey it's cheap and easy to do, anybody try it?

 

I recently drove my Prius up on Mulholland Drive here in LA and gave the engine and brakes a real workout -- and guess what? No more noise anymore. You mileage may vary but even after 500 miles, my brakes really have never been used much do the regen. (As evidenced by the rotors still looking brand new with the machining visible.)

With noise, I would be confident that removing the pads and applying anti-squeal spray to the shims would do the trick as well.
