Simmer down amigos! The pictures of the 2016 Prius remind me of the vernacular design concept of the Ford Probe and a 1960s Citroen, - at least the first 3/4 of the car. In 1960 (I know, most of you were not born then) I hated the Citroen design concept, the ugliest car ever designed. But now, I think the Citroen was way ahead of its time and I think the design theme is sexy. [IMG]

Looking at the 2016 Prius, I can already see certain elements that are begging.......BEGGING...... to be modified, some of which have already been identified in this thread. Whether you like or hate the pictures of the 2016 Prius, hopefully one of the SoCal Priinuts will acquire one of these cars, modify it, and leave everyone breathless! :sneaky:

Lol, I agree with your sentiments regarding the front headlights - using the Gen 3 as a reference, it's as if the designers placed, in the reverse direction, the left headlight on right side and right headlight on left side.

I'm quite satisfied with the clean design of the Gen 3 facelift on my 2012 PIP - the new design on the Gen 4 is interesting, but not beautiful as I've seen in some speculative renderings of the Gen 4.

I'm waiting for the PiP version. I have to have some of that EV goodness. I hope they at least hint at some of those specs.

I gotta see the Gen IV PiP range to consider it. So far it's either 16' Volt or 16' Sonata Plugin. Really hope it gets 30 mile EV range minimum and 55mpg without charging.

I believe there was two different Prii being tested. The car wr see uncovered does look like the Taiwanese rendering.
Before, the draped car was chuncky. It was slab sided. It lacked some of design elements that we now see here.
Could it be the 4th Gen test mule in the past that Mr Toyoda sent back to the drawing board?
So to wrap all this up, the Gen4 has a David Niven moustache, the side of a Ford Probe, and the rear of a Mirai. But yet it looks like a very familiar shape to most of us.
It's still a Prius. I think it will work. Sheesh!

:)FACTS please. I never stated "my BMW is a fantastic "looking" car". I stated, it's a "fantastic vehicle" (overall). Compared to the Nissan Leaf, "your" subliminal message might be correct. Why don't I have an opportunity to express my opinion? I have actual BMW i3 user experience and can back up my assessment. We'll have to wait for September 8th , but I think we have a good idea of what to expect regarding the Gen IV Prius.

I'm not really sure what to think of this, the front end looks ... ok, I guess? No real complaints there but nothing I really like either. The chunk of black plastic on the rear pillar is hideous and not a fan of the big dent running through the rear doors and quarter panels. Rims are cool. Going by the Taiwanese renderings (since they look to be nearly spot on) the rear looks... unremarkable, much like the front, and it doesn't look like they managed to fix the split rear window problem. Overall I would say this looks worse than Gen 3, they tried to add some style to it, but like most of Toyota's recent styling choices they don't really look good they just look... odd.

If I were to guess, I'd say these cars were out for the stock press photos that will be given out when the car is officially revealed in Vegas. I'd bet that the red one is the "high end" model and the blue is the "low end" model.

Citröen was way ahead of its time. Hydropneumatic suspension, front wheel drive, aerodynamic top and bottom was unheard of in 1955.
Prius is still ahead of it's time. I liked the fact that both cars put engineering ahead of styling.
We should remember that the Gen2 Prius was way ahead of the curve and the Gen 3 was again ahead.
The Gen 4 is going to be ahead again. This vehicle will be around until 2022, if Toyota follows it's six year model run. That's not nearly as long as Citröen's 20 year run with the DS-ID model with one freshening in 1968.

The first side pic of the red car and I immediately thought "Saturn Is Back".

Not just Toyota, but others have gone very ugly of late. In a major cost-cutting move, I believe Toyota has fired all of their "stylists", and hired college kids that really, really hate cars. SMH at recent designs of Highlander, 4-Runner, front end fugly.

They really need to sub their work out to Mazda. On a positive note, the depicted Prius is not nearly as ugly as I expected:)

Hmm, I'm starting to see a pattern. I looked at a PiP a year and a half ago, ended up getting a Volt (very happy with it), and I've watched the Volt world react to the Gen 2 released in January. I've also watched the Mustang forums in anticipation of the new 2015 Gen 6. The reactions in both cases were similar to what's coming up here - after months/years of hopeful but wary speculation, the faithful see the new generation and many of them hate it, "this sucks, it looks like a _______ [fill in the blank with something negative], I'm keeping my 201X until the wheels fall off". Within a year or two after release, the new gen becomes the accepted standard and looks "modern" and "fresh", the last gen looks a bit dated, and 80+% of the hating goes away, declining to a small die-hard minority. I think the same will happen here. It seems to be human nature; thankfully car designers are apparently trained to have the ability to know what we'll like long before we do (or influence our taste successfully). One of the mods asked the right question near the beginning of the thread - how many of those hating on the new design will end up buying one. I'd wager quite a few.

Personally, I really like the new design (and I liked the Gen III - I'll miss the flying buttress). If the PiP has decent range (and most importantly if the car is quieter), I'll absolutely shop it against the new Volt.

It's human nature. The more you look at something, the more accepted it becomes. The average boy/girl in class starts looking decent by the end of the year. You start singing along to a song you hated at first because Top 40 radio played it to death. I have many albums that I now consider "desert-island-albums" but I questioned my purchase upon first listening. OTOH, the stuff that you love right out of the gate wears thin. I don't think it's because artists know better than we do. They could have submitted 10 drawings and we would like 8 of them, given the time.

That said, I think Nikon and Apple are going to be seeing more of my disposable income in the upcoming years. I can tolerate the front end of this blue version, if it's going to be on the PiP. But I fear the rear.........those long vertical taillights and the deep gouge on the rear quarter panel are deal breakers. I'll need a Hail Mary on Sept 8th to like this iteration.
