U.S. only. It continues in Canada (in fact, Toyota Canada just updated the page for the 2016 Venza)

My son bought a 2015 Corolla. They are actually very nice cars at a quite reasonable price.

We had friends to dinner Sunday evening. Without us bringing the subject of spare tires up they told us their weekend story. They left on Friday for a few hundred mile trip over the mountains. They stayed in a hotel overnight then made the return trip. Along the way one of their rear tires blew out the sidewall. The Pontiac Solstice they were driving didn't have a spare. It had a repair kit and a can of compressed air, both of which were useless in this case. While they easily could have had no cell service on that stretch of road they were lucky. The tow truck arrived in less than an hour, but there was no way to fix their tire so the Pontiac was towed to their home. Their insurance paid all but $75 of the tow bill due to the distance. Then they were facing the task today of jacking the Pontiac up in the garage, removing the burst tire, and taking it in to have it repaired with a new tire. My friend lost a day's pay in the process.

This is one type of scenario I want to avoid.

What was the cause of blown sidewall? Old, under inflated tyre that can't take the heat or road debris? I bet that in 99% it's the first scenario. Ask your self why TPMS is now in every new car.

Blown sidewall must be avoided at it's source, because a spare tyre is at least of your problems when rear tyre blows at highway speed.

Wow. Cars still need a spare tire.

My daughter leased hers last year. Nice car for the price. Her words, "Thanks Dad, you made me a Toyota snob". She compared a bunch of cars, driving all kinds before settling on the Corolla.

Exactly. Almost all of them are caused by driving on a near-flat tire until the rim slices off the side wall.

Mine flat was a roofing nail, hers was a true blow out. Goodyear would never admit they had a "problem".
Michelin, Toyo, Bridgestone make great tires. Korean Hankook are not too bad either. A friend's Nissan 300zx TwinTurbo uses Hankook with great success.
Back in the Eighties, I helped with tire testing. They drove a Mercury Grand Marquis on four of the temporary spare tires. They got 20k miles out of them before they needed to be replaced. The drivers said handling in the rain was spooky.

Also, in the cargo plane picture, it looks like the rear headrests are still a separate unit! Toyota's going back to integrated rear headrests (see current Corolla and Camry models) which look uglier than their 90s counterpart in part of (I'm assuming) a rear headrest regulation that the DOT has. (Notice how US spec cars have larger rear headrests than European or Asian spec cars. The 3rd Gen Prius outside of NA has the L-shaped height-adjustable headrest similar to the 2nd Gen while US/Cdn spec cars have the large, non-height-adjustable, but foldable headrest).

My headrests are adjustable height. Not that I ever do.

We need adjustable headrests. Removing the headrests is how you get the seats to fold flat so you can haul lumber.

You mean on the front passenger seat, so it folds back flat?

The Gen 3 front seats don't fold completely flat but with the passenger headrest removed and the seat right forward, you can get the seat flat enough to carry lumber or to carry a countertop home from IKEA.
