i wonder what this thread would be like if they showed us the specs and data first, then unveiled the looks on 9/8.

Agreed! Urban drivers who are within walking distance of a tire shop have TOTALLY different conception of "spare tire" than Rural drivers who can be literally miles/hours away from tire-repair services.

I totally agree. My daughter's refused to drive my Gen 2. My wife also want heated seats ( her HyCamry has them, very nice on a cold winter's day). A Pontiac Aztek parked next to any Prius makes the Prius look better. Know what you have when you have three Azteks on the same lot? Lifetime supply.

When you analyze facts, you may have to think and do math; head may hurt!

Yes, we are some of the most sophisticated owners out there, in PriusChat for crying out loud. We are Prius "Connoisseurs", aren't we?,:D

Good point. But remember Toyota didn't really give us any hints or previews officially so it is possible that is what they intended to do - maybe the boss was going to come on stage and describe what they have achieved in figures and then the drapes taken down to reveal the car. Maybe that is still the plan and maybe more of us will like G4 after the official reveal.

I work 7 miles from the nearest repair possibility, my flying field is four miles from one, both of which have dirt roads.

And, no, walking 4-7 miles to get help is not acceptable. But with the likelihood of that remote and cell phone accessible road-side assistance, I see no good reason to carry a spare tire anymore (unlike the days of bias-ply fiberglass-belted tires and no cell phones). I carry a tool kit, blanket and large towel in my trunk for emergencies because the spare is taking up the space for those items, and I carry food in the center console where some cars have their Lithium battery. Those items get used orders of magnitude more often than a spare tire (dozens of times a year for me).

The other problem with a spare is that very few people check to make sure their spare is inflated. I do it about twice a year, but most people never do it. I've checked out the cars of friends and family only to find less than 10psi in their spare tires. That's not a useful item.

Maybe it (the doughnut spare) should be solid...thus not needing/requiring air pressure...to be used TRULY only during emergencies?

i suppose it would help if it didn't take 15 minutes to open the well, unscrew the tyre, take it out and flip it over, check the pressure, rinse and repeat.

Sending units in the spare tire solved this issue

Everyones situation is different. We can drive 40 minutes east or west and be many miles from service with no cell service.

Almost everyone can do that. I live and work at the foot of the Rocky Mountains.

What will you do if you are in such a situation and your radiator cracks (as happened to me on the way to work one day), a radiator hose blows (as happened to me on a trip once), or your ECU dies (as happened to me at a repair shop once), or your 12V battery dies (as happened to me outside a restaurant once)? Will you carry a spare for all of those possible causes of failure?

You talkin about them new-fangled Volvos??
My 1959 PV 544 was VERY round, roughly like a miniature 1930s Chrysler "Airflow". The Volvo 122s was a very curvy "sports" car.
The Volvo 144s I owned, were definite boxes, as was the 244 series right afterward, but I would bet that their Cd was very poor, roughly that of a brick.
Kinda wish I had still had the SAAB 93B and wind tunnel to test its Cd in. Also the boat-tail 1950s Citroens Cd would be interesting .
Me, I like the Gen 3 egg.

Not sure what you mean by that statement.
