I past 70. Too old to say that I died young.

But aren't the youth that we are told Toyota executives aimed at, many, if not most, cannot afford a new Pri?

 

another good question. demographics. i don't know if we have any meaningful information.

i do know that many college grads can afford and do buy $24,000. cars. vdubs, mazda's, honda's and toyota's. but i can't put a number on it.

i do think many youth are more into looks and sportiness than personal responsibility.

 

I'm not so sure the young are easily sold on form-over-function, for that matter.

Hey, I hit one of those metal dashboards, and before seat belts. The Gen 4 looks to me like the center instrument cluster moves up and down. Now that would be innovative, maybe even slightly weird.

I could be an optical illusion. Maybe the screens are customizable, too!!!

Gen 4 will be a natural evolution of the Prius heritage. My opinion is that Toyota did not want to end up somewhere in Left Field with Gen 4. They have to be innovative without alienating their customer base. Too far out, no customers. Not far enough, no customers.

I remember reading that the target for Gen 2 was a 49 year old male, professional with concern for the environment. That was myself about twelve years ago.

Goodpoints! That explains why the Prius has a stubby nose. I'm not sure they could cut down that area very much.
Improving Aerodynamics to Boost Fuel Economy

 

So since we are doing opinions...here's mine.

I would speculate that most do not buy the Prius for looks...at least I didn't...however...the Gen I's were so butt ugly I wouldn't even consider one. The Gen II's were better (not by much), but "locally" you had to pay $3,000-$4,000 over MSRP, wait 2-3 months for delivery, hope it was the color your wanted...and there were no demos to test drive. The Gen III's looks became tolerable and price gouging disappeared (before the Tsunami), buy my initial purchase in 2010 was strictly an experiment to test the reliability and economy of the vehicle for everyday commuting...not because I liked the way it looked. As a Mechanic, I will say the reliability thus far has earned highest marks...at least after my 95K miles of experience. Economy (TCO) can be twisted many ways based on usage, options and OTD cost, but the mechanical reliability cost savings offset the hybrid price premium for our use...just barely. The results were such that I bought a new 2015 LB (Gen III) for my Son going off to College Part II.

So the way "I" see it, the Prius is a choice and compromise...just like anything else in life. I still think the "suspected" Gen IV went backwards on the ugly chart though...but that's me. Will the great reliability and TCO be there? We'll just have to wait and see.

That's two of us, bisco. I'd say they hit the target. Only thing was they had a hit on their hands. I waited six months for mine. Nov.03 to April 04.

The small front window follows the Honda Civic Gen8 to Gen9. Having owned both the visibility is much improved by moving the glass to the door with a small mullion. I would hope the rear visibility is also improved. Another detail is the front wheel well seems huge the wheel and appears to even gets narrower closer to the ground. I also think the mustache appearance is reduced by spanning across.

 

I think it would look OK if not for the floating C pillar. If I were to get one, I would perhaps get a black one to mitigate the ugliness of that C pillar.

Also not a huge fan of the new headlights.

Why does it seem so difficult for Toyota to design a conventionally attractive hybrid?

of course, i tried to get a gen I, when i was 46, 47, 48, but they weren't available. i wonder how young i might have bought one? i'm thinking when we finally dumped the minivan, around 35.

 

My wife is talking about maybe the Gen IV for her "retirement" car. Total cost of ownership, longevity and reliability would be the major reasons for this purchase. Plus we are talking about moving to somewhere in Florida.
There are plenty of Toyota dealers there and only one month of winter. I know its hot and humid but I can have the A/C on cold.
Hurricanes and sinkholes would be my greatest fears. The water is much softer, and Prii are everywhere.
