Spin on oil filter

how much room is there between the oil filter & the engine block?

 

There is more space with the thin metal spin on filter than the thicker larger diameter plastic one.

 

More than enough. Plus, it is just easier to loosen and spin off or put back in.

 

I didn't really notice. It does look kinda tight in the pic. There was no problem with a plain metal oil filter socket, that has wall thickness a bit over 1/16". Maybe a thick walled cast-aluminum oil filter socket would be problematic, not sure.

My itteration of oil filter bracket is different than @Montgomery's, not sure if the center of filter is any different.

 

What I think fools people is that because you can't attach a wrench to it, it is more difficult to work with. With canister types, when putting it in, you apply fresh oil on the oil ring, screw it in, and hand tighten as tight as you can. Upon starting the engine, the oil pump produces enough pressure to seal the oil ring that you put the fresh oil on, therefore no leaking. In all my driving years (since 1974) this is how I have installed the canister type filters. Not one ever came loose. If anything, sometimes I needed the old canister clamp remover to loosen it. But overall...........spin on, tighten as hard as you can, then spin it off to remove is what I have done.

 

Catridge equals disposable paper filter in a permanent housing, and Cannister equals spin-on? I can never keep the terms straight.

 

Yeah, it can be confusing. I don't have an answer to make it easy.

 

After a grocery run, I though why don't I just raise it again and verify everything's tight, no leaks. That seems like a really good idea...

Also took a look at that clearance: it's maybe 1/4". The engiine block does bulge out a bit more, just beyond the oil filter, so maybe best to stick with the stock filter, not the longer one (used on Camry, RAV4?).

Part no of stock filter is 90915-YZZF2. Filter that's maybe 1/2" longer (same diameter?), in use on Camry etc, has last number changed to "1". Clearance does appear to reduce just beyond end of filter, the engine block bulged out a bit.

When I bought the filter parts guy told me about the Camry filter, said it would also work. I'm ok with stock though.

 

No matter what size you get, this is how you would get it off. Can you see how this would work? This tool is so old school, but it does the job. No matter how tight the area or the filter.

...or just stick a screwdriver through it and turn, if not reusing the filter.

the xg4967 is the same size as the toyota filter you put on, the xg4386 is half an inch longer & the xg3600 is two inches longer /
you think the oversized ones will fit?

 

They might be problematic? Here's an earlier pic (think I maybe posted previously?). You can see how the wall of the block bulges out just beyond the filter. Maybe 1/2" longer filter at most.

If you use the tool I suggested or as Vman455 suggests, just sticking a screwdriver thru it for leverage you will have no problem no matter the size. This thing ain't gonna be like the wrestling match you have with the paper filter type.

 

I was wondering if the longer size fits because of the engine block bulge, not because of the filter removal /

 

Oh, now I get it. Yep, You may want to keep it on the short type. I didn't even notice the bulge.
