The plug in option is the most exciting change but only 9km in electric mode isn't a huge advance over the current Prius capability of 3-4km in electric mode.

With only 9 miles EV mode rumored for the MY'09, I'm thinking the EDrive Systems 30-mile mod is starting to look more appealing. The tie-breaker for me would be if the '09 has a higher top speed for EV mode driving. Also, a plug-in hybrid has got to have an EV switch, otherwise what's the point? What if the car has a 9-mile range, but Toyota disables the EV software for the North American model?

Say the '09 gets 80 mpg, but you cannot implement an EV switch. Then again, the EDrive Systems mod, at 100 mpg for low daily mileages appears the better choice if the quality of work is high enough.

To the original poster, I'd always say buy the Prius now, and enjoy it for the more than two years before the '09 comes out.

    Ken,

Seen any info regarding when a HSD RAV4 might emerge? It would trump the next gen Prius for me.

I don't know about the HSD RAV4 at all.
However, Toyota is saying "TMC aims to make hybrid vehicles more widespread by doubling the number of hybrid models by the early years of the 2010s."
