Try the experiment, but without getting out of the car!

I'm also surprised to see that it's not too expensive, but also a little sad that replacing that 1 part is that expensive. I just had a Camry bumper replaced fun uder $300. Maybe with time the Prius parts will come down in price... Until then let's all make a pact not to wreck our cars. Who's with me?

Well as far as the cost is concerned the part costs 187 paint and supplies cost 140 and rest is labour......

The insurance company will say you should have set the parking brake. Then no matter what gear it's in, it's not going anywhere.

Of course, they'll probably also say you shouldn't have left it running.

    It's what insurance companies do.

That price is reasonable. There's quite a bit of labor in just the painting, clearcoating, and buffing. And that's after removal/replacement of the existing bumper cover.

$600 is a cheap lesson to learn in mho. most of the lessons i have learned in my life cost me much much more.

i wasnt going to mention this but there was once last year, i was in a hurry, pulled into the post office and needed to run in to get some stamps or something, was very early in morning and was not going to turn it off since i was getting stamps out of the machine, so no waiting in line or anything.

i tapped the park button and started to hop out and it was still in drive, it rolled forward about 2 feet or so before i could stop it. (was half out of the car when i realized it was still moving) i came about 6 inches away from hitting a car parked in front of me.

after that, i make sure its in park before getting out. i should set the parking brake, but i never do unless im parked on a hill.

It's always a bummer when we do something dumb and have to ante up to fix it. I've certainly done that enough in my life to empathize.

Assume the simplest cause, don't blame the car: you didn't press the Park button all the way and it didn't engage. You were distracted. You should never leave a car without setting the parking brake and turning it off. It's particularly easy to do so with the Prius because when you come to a stop it's normally so quiet. I like that the SKS beeps at me if I leave the power on when I get out of the vehicle for this reason.

A good body shop will tell you both insurance and cash estimates. Go get an estimate. From that, you'll know what to do.
