Solution for USB drawing too much power?

Again, nothing has changed on my end, the super old ipod and cable are the same. Things have changed on the car; software updates from Toyota and wear and tear. My passenger door sensor, that allows for unlocking and locking of the car, when the key is near has completely stopped working too. I am wondering if the USB thing is age just like the door sensor.

So your iPod has no wear and tear, no operating system updates, no apps or app updates that might increase current draw, no battery degradation from aging?

We are not going anywhere with this until you confirm (or not) that your particular device model/version is listed as compatible, or is otherwise known to meet particular compatibility standards. Just because it worked for a while, does not mean that it meets the applicable standards and will always continue to work as components age and drift.

As that Apple link I posted earlier shows, not all iPods meet the older USB power standards. Some are built to newer, higher power USB versions. Those might or might not work with older USBs, and that might even change over time.

Have you confirmed that your particular iPod and OS are on this list (2012 Liftback manual)?:

 

OK, I have an ipod nano 6th generation. That device came out in 2010 and stopped production in 2012. I have never done an update to the iOS from it, but I'll check on the iOS version.
My iPod's only wear and tear is playing through the car. I don't ever take it out of the car and it's pretty much connected all the time. It's always fully charged too so I can't imagine the power draw when it's already fully charged is much at all.
The cable I use is a basic, cheap cable for charging and can't provide data over it. It's a simple cheap cable. I've tried my iphone and other iphones with a different cable, a lightning cable, and also had the same problem.
What I'm even noticing now is that 90% of the time, the car doesn't even recognize the ipod is plugged in.
I'll check the iOS tomorrow. I do have a 2012 v so maybe the car's just gotten old and this electronic function failed. (Like I think I also said earlier, the lock and unlock feature of the passenger door handle, when it senses the car key near, hasn't worked for the past year too.

 

The whole Prius USB power draw issue is so easily and cheaply resolved with something like this, providing far more current than the factory USB was ever meant to put out:

 

I don't think this solves the problem at all. I'm not trying to use the port to charge anything. I'm trying to play my ipod through the USB port, by access the music and selecting it on the Prius touch screen, and also use the steering wheel controls to scroll though music.

Is that just a usb drive? Do you plug that into the usb port and it will recognize the music on the drive. Can it play apple's m4a files?

 

(1)Yes (2) Yes (3) All my files are WMA or MP3 formats, it plays them fine. I don't have any Apple devices or files in Apple formats, so don't know, look it up in the Owner's Manuals.
