The biggest issue to me is the water damage. Think about DocVijay's Prius way back in the day, it was totalled mainly because of the hole in the windshield allowing water into the cabin.

Yeah water damage directly above the HV battery seems like a major "uh-oh" waiting to happen. I would definitely try to get it "totaled". Let your Toyota dealer know what you want now so they can start looking for one now.

FYI, have you heard? You're not suppose to have an aquarium in the back.

This is a fishtank in Bangkok. Best use possible out of a Chevy to date.

Sorry to hear that (and on the bright side, what an immaculate 1G Prius!)

Roof damage, eh? So the solar panels are damaged? I wonder what the repair cost is on that?

That aquarium car is really cool, until one of the guppies hits the window down button, or a kid decides to open the door.

Sorry to see such damage to another Prius. See the thread (and picts) under my post "2010 Prius repaired after accident, what should I look for when I pick it up?" for insights into how insurance determines what is totaled. The frame and water damage in your case may pencil out to = "totaled" even though the pictures of my car look worse. Mine was not totaled and yes, it is the insurance company's call, not yours.

    Best of luck!

UPDATE: I just received an estimate of under $6200 to repair the vehicle. However, this estimate will have to be re-evaluated once the outer parts are removed and the interior is examined in more detail. The car is not totalled by the insurance company.

I can say that dealing with the insurance company, even your own, is not fun and downright frustrating. I have been calling everyday for a status, since they don't call me. I also downgraded my rental in order to extend the rental coverage beyond 30 days ($900 limit) in case the repairs take longer than a month, and I lost 5 days already since the insurance company's estimator did not show up until 5 days after I called to file a claim (@ 6:30AM).

I'll be calling the body shop on Monday to ensure they kept the hybrid batteries charged by turning the car on for 30 minutes every week. If the hybrid batteries completely discharge, they can be ruined and I don't have $3-4000 to replace them. Already went through this mess with my 2002 Prius, and I ended up suing that (different) body shop for negligence since they never turned the car on for over a month while repairing the body damage, and I told them to do the 30-minute-per-week procedure (I was T-boned on the driver side by an elderly driver, on the day before New Years).

Holy cow! You haven't had good luck with your Prii and objects colliding into them.

With regards to the body shop, I would call AND send them a registered letter telling them they must turn on the car for at least 30 min ea. week. CYA and all that, just in case, for legal purposes. People are notoriously forgetful, I've noticed. I'd almost be tempted to put a big sign in the car window reminding them to run the car for 30 min (in addition to the above).

Yep, basically already handled. I provided a copy of the I-Car articles on hybrid battery care to the manager of the body shop, and I check with them weekly to ensure they are turning on the car for 30 minutes to charge the batteries. I have uploaded the articles at http://priuschat.com/forums/file-li...-repairs-hybrid-battery-care.html#post1164911 if anyone else needs to view them (and to inform their collision repair folks).

The aquarium photos were very cute. I wonder if anyone has a window tint that makes the Prius look like it is an aquarium... :)

The dark thing on your roof is the solar package?
Either way, you can fix it. It doesn't look so bad.

At least your family was not in there, you are all safe, watching something that can be fixed.

I'm going to estimate $7000-9000 in damages. I just replaced my front passenger's EXTERIOR door shell + had it painted...about $1700 for that alone. That was a single piece sheet of metal and just 2-3 days of labor.

The good thing is that your insurance might NOT go up because this is a comprehensive claim. Mine didn't go up... and it was a hit and run while the car was parked though I think it fell under collision, but either way no increase in rates per insurance co.

It may be a reality of the business and the nature of the work. I don't want to go out of my way to insult the body shop industry.

But I have yet to deal with any body shop work where the original estimate and the original work needed didn't increase as the job was done. Seems they ALWAYS discover something additional they couldn't see originally once they start working on the vehicle.

Good Luck. Unfortunately you are in that "bad" zone of repair. Not bad enough for a total loss...not unsubstantial enough to really not worry...

Well Silentak1, you are very close on your estimate. Early last week, I called the Body Shop for a status and was told additional damages were found, so the insurance's claims adjuster had to go back out to generate a second estimate. Details:
    1. Original Estimate: $6,126.98
    2. Supplement S01: $3,754.32

    Total: $9,881.30.

It should be completely repaired by September 3. 2 parts were on backordered (solar roof panel and liftgate).

All right, what do I win? :p

Sorry about your car...at least they will be using all original parts since there are really no aftermarket body parts in the market yet.

It's amazing how quickly the tab skyrockets with little additional pieces here and there...

    Three words
    Inherent Diminished Value

Make sure your ins. co compensates you for the above. They will fight with you about it. Once your car is fixed the repair is part of it's vehicle history. Your car is worth substantially less due to the damage history.
The concept of insurance is to make one whole. If your car is totaled or sold in the future it is worth less. You should be compensated for that diminished value. You may need to hire an Atty. or expert, here in Oregon the Ins. Co. has to pay that as well if it goes that far.

Wow, makes me wonder how much that solar panel costs to replace. On a side note - I've often wondered if the moon-roof and solar glass fall under the "Zero deductible glass coverage" we get in AZ.

Who's your insurance company so we know to avoid them in the future?

"Relax, all right? My old man is a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools. I can fix it."

I knew Fast Times at Ridgemont High would come in handy.

Sorry for your pain. My Ford Explorer blew up last month while in Las Vegas, NV. So, I bought my Prius. If my Prius blows up (or is otherwise destroyed), I ask you all to remove knives and any other sharp objects from around me.
