That is actually an excellent idea. Deleting the off-topic stuff would be an excellent way to restore the dignity of this thread about TJs struggle with diabetes. I would gladly see my post #232 edited out along with the rest of the off-topic posts. Heck, you could even edit out this post as well....

On MONDAY, I went to my foot doctor, DR. DAVEY SUH, and he has been treating this busted toe of mine, on my left foot, (the toe next to the big toe), for about, what, a year and a half?
And it’s still not healing, so he said to me on Monday, that the toe may have to go. Still. After all that money spent for a years worth of work. Why couldn’t he just say it had to go, then, and saved me the money? Sigh. He also said he was disappointed in the course of treatment that I was receiving from the NORTH TEXAS WOUND CENTER ; he thought that I should be getting a more sophisticated treatment, then the one I am getting. More sighs. SO, he wants to treat me now; in his words, he can ‘do what they are doing, and not cost you the hospital fees’ which leaves me wondering what IS the best thing to do here.

    Oy.

my brothers brother in law had diabetes and ended amputating his left leg in 3 separate operations over the course of 22 years. his last operation was almost 8 years ago and everything seems to be stabilizing pretty well now. (his other operations, he started having issues within a year or two afterwards)

i cant even begin to understand the weight of making such a decision with my own body, so i will most definitely not try to persuade you in any way. i also would not envy your doctors in any way. the question you ask is a tough one to answer especially when the unsaid question is really "is there any hope?" and a absolute answer is just really impossible to quantify.

i cant blame you for pursuing hope no matter how slim it chance of success. hope in one form or another, is only real reason we strive to live. sure its expensive. i dont know what your financial situation is, earning power etc., but rarely do live's major decisions not come with a huge caveat.

+1. I won't attempt to weigh in on the treatment side, as that is a personal decision that needs to be made between TJ and his doctor(s). My only comment is that if the North Texas Wound Center is charging $300/visit for the privilege of being treated at their facilities (aka 'branding'), with no use of specialized diagnostic equipment or any other compelling reason to be treated there, it gets pretty hard to rationalize the continued expenditure of the $300/visit charge.

TJ, my sincere wishes go to you for a recovery that allows you to keep your leg and foot.

as i mentioned, he went thru pretty much the same thing. he simply got tired of devoting so much of his life to appointments and treatment. doctor visits were not that bad. in and out, but hospital visits were another story. a lot of his treatment required going to the hospital and usually required several hours out of his day.

the impact on his time was really the "straw that broke the camel's back". now that his issues are currently in check (his losing 160 lbs no doubt helped. he is 6' 8" and on his last operation in 2001, he weighed 400+ lbs.) he is back to his "normal" doctor visits every month or so.

Hint: As a result of a discussion on 'another forum I frequent' if you do have to have an amputation be sure to wrap notes around all the body parts you don't want amputated.

It was a discussion about 'nuisence lawsuits' but unless you want to have to consider filing one limit thier options on what'll get cut off once you're under, Assuming you're not going to skip anestesia to save money.

Okay, update time. I went to the NORTH TEXAS WOUND CENTER today. Found out why I am on the treatment I am on. Whilst there, the doctor told me that my leg is doing a bit better, even if my pulse is a bit off at my ankle. Not sure what that meant.
He also looked at my busted toe on my left foot; thinks I need an X-RAY, so he ordered it. After asking me, curiously enough, if I 'was okay with that.' What does that mean?

He put MEDIHONEY™ active manuka honey on my toe. Said it would not mess up my blood sugar. And said those magic words, 'If this toe goes, it will take your left foot'. Seems that the injury is that bad there.
    Nice.

And I suspect the X-Ray won't be cheap. Another $400 for this visit. I mention that, only because I just can't help but to wonder what happens to those who can't really afford this. I mean, I can't really, but I am just doing it. Didn't pay the electric this month, but that's okay; didn't pay the phone last month and had to pay that this month. I see nothing but the bills snowballing, but again, what can I do? Got to spend the money on the medical care, right?

    I'll keep you all updated.

Sounds like good news (improvement on your leg) and not so good news (your foot). It might be worth exploring a payment plan with North Texas Wound Center. At this point, it sounds like you are robbing Peter (phone bill, electric bill, etc.) to pay Paul (North Texas Wound Center).

I wish I could get on a payment plan, but alas, not going to happen.

It's just the way life is, you know?

Some people get concerned about the exposure of having too many X-rays. The dentists I've seen recently asked before.

I think it was the cost, if you ask me. That's what I think, at least.

On TUESDAY, I had a WAY too early dentist appointment. Why do I mention that here? Well, read on campers.

I found out that I will have to get implants in my upper part of my mouth. That ole’ cancer of mine, (still in remission and all), has along with the diabetes, weakened my upper teeth; they are severely damaged. I have a partial denture up there already.

Now I will have the rest of my ‘good’ teeth taken out up there. (Insert old man with no teeth sound here). My bottom teeth seem to be fine; they have for the most part, always been fine.

So on August 31, I will see a oral surgeon. It is yet another reason to watch out when you are younger, and healthier, your sugar intake. Avoid the diabetes at all costs.

Today I went to get a x-ray of my left toe, or should I say, the toe next to the big toe, on my left foot, and that cost a zillion dollars/well, it weren't cheap. Anyway, the toe does not have a fracture, but it does have a concern of a shadow that my doctor wants to talk to the radiologist about. Bottom line for the toe: Is it may still have to go. But they want to try out some treatments first.

As to the leg wound, it seems to be getting better, so I am told; still not out of the water yet, as in, they can not say 100% that I won't lose the leg, but on the other hand, they feel less likely that I will lose it. Does that make sense?

I see him again in two weeks, unless the toe requires more immediate attention.

Sounds like a bit of good news on the leg front (or at least some cautious optimism), and a little wait and see regarding the toe. My hopes and best wishes are with you as always TJ.

    {Rare to find an MD who knows that zinc is good for a sore throat.}
It isn't zinc, it's zinc glutamate. The active ingredient in Cold-eeze, if I, likely, got the chemical name wrong.

Hey, in late breaking news, and I'm not sure why this is, but my right ankle/foot is very swollen, and is very 'cushy' to the touch. And, (this next part really concerns me), my foot/ankle really hurts. For those who know me, I don't feel anything bellow the knee, so for this to HURT, means the pain must be seriously evil.

I see my foot doctor on Monday; I hope the swelling has gone down by then. Still the question I have is, why is swollen? The last time something got like this, my pinkie toe was infected. But the foot/ankle doesn't loon infected...could I have broken it somehow, and not know it? Oy.
