Smog Check

    The first 4 years of a car are exempt from smog tests. If you look at the registration, you would have a smog abatement fee during this period. The dmv gets the fees regardless.

    If there's a change in ownership, they would require a smog test to transfer ownership

    This is really weird because I own a 2004 Prius, owned it since new, never asked to have it smog checked INCLUDING when I got a notice to renew due Nov 20th, 2015. I should have been hit with a smog check after April of this year like other owners, but I wasn't. Maybe because this is an odd year from the purchase year and they only smog on even years? I thought cars over 11 years old had to be smog checked yearly, although I guess it's technically just hit year 11...

    Anyway, I only found out about this new requirement because I'm trying to sell it (I got an EV) and the smog requirement is listed on DMV's web site. Bah! I almost avoided ever having to smog it. I just hope it passes.

    It'll pass if it doesn't have a check engine light on
