Smart Key Fob Housing Replacement

Be careful if you do not glue the case. I rebuilt my fob snapping it together thinking that will hold without glue. A few days later I dropped the fob on hard ground (concrete) and it fell to pieces scattering the parts. It would be very easy to loose the transponder chip because it is so small without realizing that it is gone. You could still open the car but not start it without the transponder.
On tarmac or gravel it may be impossible to find.

I bought a replacement housing from ebay and moved the electronics over but have discovered that the OEM battery cover screws are not compatible with the new housing.

Did the people who've done this not have this issue or get new screws delivered with their new housing?

 

New screws came with the housing in a tiny plastic bag easily not spotted in the packaging.

Fished the packaging out of the bin and found the screws. One of them was missing the threads but fortunately they had sent five!

I had to replace both fobs on my 2004 Prius (with 105,000 miles). I got the replacement fobs for $12 each on ebay and transferred the electronics over. The fobs work the lock/unlock, but would not start the car. RobH's tip on the transponder works fine and both fobs now fully functional.

John, Thanks for the tip. I was going to rely on the snap fit, but I have a feeling your advice will be beneficial 8 years later.
