I'd skip it. On the rare occasion IF I do have a MAJOR issue, I'll fix it up reasonably, then I'll negotiate and trade up to a different car or newer Prius (if the experience was bitter enough). $4k+ for extended warranty on such an affordable car is utterly and absolutely ridiculous. I don't foresee the Prius having any major issues on the majority of them sold. This isn't some German high-tech car with an air-lifting suspension system with 10 different settings... Thank goodness it isn't.
Sing this to the song "Beat it". Skip It/sip it for Bisco Michael Jackson They told him don't you ever buy it round here Don't want to see your face, you better disappear The greed in their eyes and their words are really clear So skip it, just skip it You better run, you better run while you can Don't want to see an empty wallet, don't be a broke man You want to be tough, better walk while you can So skip it, but you want to be had Just skip it, skip it, skip it, skip it No one wants to be cheated Showin' how cheap and stingy is your fight It doesn't matter your money is tight Just skip it, skip it Just skip it, skip it Just skip it, skip it Just skip it, skip it They're out to get you, better leave while you can Don't want to be a victim, you want to be a man You want to stay rich, better do what you can So skip it, just skip it Put up your Wallet and skip it
Remember Dr Strange Love taught in drug class: Just say no since you can always say yes later. This thread is similar to the $1 hotdog combo at SAMS at Slickdeals. Same mother different fathers.
If you were buying a car that was NOT known for excellent reliability, then I would get that warranty. I really would not spend the money to insure a well maintained Prius. The other thing, I never buy used cars, always new. I also do my own maintenance, and am quite OCD when it comes to my vehicles.
