Shifting to Neutral Requiring a "Hold."

    I was standing in a traffic jam , on D when I instead of going forward the car went back . does anyone have heard about something like that?

    You either have some extra words or some missing ones, there. But if I interpret correctly, no, I've never heard of that and it sounds like you'd better get it towed to a Toyota shop before driving it again. Sounds very dangerous. :eek:

    Not sure exactly what you are asking.

    A really LOT of cars will roll backwards if they are sitting on the slightest upward grade if in gear and foot off the brake.

    I suspect that a hybrid would be even more likely to do that if the gas engine is off at the moment.

    So.....if I understand the situation correctly....yes, perfectly normal.

    OTOH, if you stepped on the gas and it started moving backwards instead of forward.........then of course that is a problem.

    No, a Prime won't do that at all since it has hill start assist. It won't even roll back on my driveway which is a 10% grade.

    One real long shot: it was cars in adjacent lanes moving forward, creating the illusion you were rolling back? I doubt this myself. And when that happens, your brain senses something is wrong, tips the nausea switch, lol.

    It's more the panic switch for me.

    It could be. Is this your first Toyota? The ones I have had seem more likely to roll back on inclines than the Fords and GMs I've driven.

    Not all hill start assists are the same.
    In the Sonic, it appears to activate when the car is stopped and senses an incline. At least past Toyotas(poster asking lists a 2010 Prius) required the brake pedal to be depressed farther, maybe even floored, before it turns on the assist.

    Mine has that too.
    But you have to "activate" it with a firm push on the brake pedal AND it only lasts about 10 seconds.

    And his profile does not indicate that he has a Prime. ??????

    In my Prime, hill start assist doesn't seem to need any more activation than what is normally used to stop. It activates all the time for me and I doubt I've ever floored the pedal.

    If the OP is talking about a 2010, he's in the wrong forum.
