Shifting into neutral

    Thanks, that's one I forgot. Coasting up-hill is another way to use that stored energy.

    I see the point of coasting in neutral, when the goal is move the car as far as possible on stored kinetic energy.

    I once ran out of fuel a few miles out of Butte MT, and was able to coast all the way back into town, and up to a gas pump in neutral.

    If memory serves, there was a resurgence of interest in vaporizing carburetors in the 70s, but I believe the consensus among experts was that it results in a dangerously lean condition which could result in engine damage. In the 1930s, the infamous Fish Carburetor, for which it's inventor claimed hundreds of miles per gallon, was the basis of every conspiracy theory about it ever since.

    Vaporizing carburetors were used in farm tractors in the early 20th century, in order to use a lower grade of fuel called "distillate." The hazards of lean ignition were much less of a concern in the large, heavy and slow-running engines of the day.

    The Honda CVCC engine was the first to utilize lean ignition in a practical way.

    If we forget about the lean/rich mixture and the ignition timing does it make sense to anyone else that vapor would burn more completely then the myst created by the carb or injectors and use far less volume of fuel to produce the same amount of torque. Back when Henry was experimenting with his first ICE on frozen Lake St Clair, it ran without an oil pan and the crank was exposed. Talk about a lean condition on the crank bearings.
    And from what I understand about the conversion from crude to gas, it also is a type of distillation process. I wonder if the fuel mentioned above was an ethanol base fuel, cause that would bring me back around to monsanto / gmo and several more potential conspiracies / secrets.     Way to much data here to write anything in stone yet, at least for me so far.

    It would be nice if in the future the highway system gets built so us gliders can coast from coast to coast or pole to pole in n

    Ebrake or emergency brake will slow you down didn't you have regular brakes? Whats wrong with the brake pedal. Also, if you revved the engine and double clutched or slipped the clutch you should have been able to match the synchro of the transmission and jimmied or ground your way into a gear?

    i do the neutral coasting to gain speed to 75-80mph downhill to get me up the following hill or keep things nice on the flats or slight upgrades so i can continue on SHM. Then i have used the momentum from the hill to push me up the next hill or maintain California Highway speeds on flattish terrain. I then let some of the speed gradually bleed off which offsets the need to give it further accelerator pedal. If i need my battery charged i don't Neutral coast; i will combine Neutral with some B. Every hill is different. Only if i have enough juice stored do i neutral coast and the descent is long enough to warrant it.

    Not sure what all the fuss is over Neutral Coasting. Because you aren't turning off the engine. I have done Neutral coasting in my Ford F150 down large descents on the 14 Freeway in Acton and Agua Dolce. No brakes, No power steering and no drag, you are going fast and it is difficult to steer. Yes the MPG goes up since the engine is not idling and yes it is dangerous. Not sure what people are so uptight about the Neutral gliding. Incidentally, i did this on the Ford F150 just to see what it was like if the engine turned off in a controlled situation; in the off chance my gas pump turned off, had a leak or ran out of gas. Always better to run through the what ifs ahead of time. Makes me sleep better at night and keeps me alive. They call this situational awareness (disaster recovery?)

    I guess you never saw the brakes on these early US Toyotas. The rear are drum brakes, and would fade. As far as Emergency brakes, we called them Parking brakes for a reason.

    The Prius has no "neutral" per say. The engine never disconnects from the wheels. If the engine is stopped while the vehicle is moving, the motor- generator must compensate by running in reverse.

    Why do they have an N between R and D and what happens when you shift to the N position?

    They are required by law to have N.
    49 CFR 571.102 - Standard No. 102; Transmission shift position sequence, starter interlock, and transmission braking effect. | LII / Legal Information Institute
    "A neutral position shall be located between forward drive and reverse drive positions."

    The Prius is always in Drive, all the other gears are emulations. In P a Pawl stops Motor/Generator 2 from turning. Since it is directly connected to the wheels, they can't turn either.
    In R, M/G 2 turns backwards, so the car goes backwards.
    In B, the engine will turn above 24 MPH as needed, to provide engine braking by pumping air fruitlessly. This lowers MPG, but can help keep your brakes from overheating, and again it is required by law. "In vehicles having more than one forward transmission gear ratio, one forward drive position shall provide a greater degree of engine braking than the highest speed transmission ratio" The Prius PHV seems to have a more robust B as it has a larger battery to dump regenerated electricity into.

    In N, no electricity is supplied or derived from M/G 1 or 2, so the engine may turn the planetary gears but has nothing to push against since the M/Gs are inert.
    You can neither start nor stop the engine in N, as M/G 1 acts as the starter and it is not powered.
    The big battery is not charged while in N, which can cause problems in car washes where the car has to move.
    There is no regenerative braking in N, since the M/Gs are not allowed to make or use electricity.

    The Prius PHV will have fewer issues with N, as it has a larger battery.


    (this is a slightly simpler Gen 2 Transaxle, the current versions are even harder to visualize)

    I normally would shift to N if I'm going down hill (if the slope is not very steep) and my speed is over 45 mph

    NO!!

    The " Evaporated water-alcohol infusion system "( EWAI ), that I put on my 2011 Prius, is NOT a injection system with a pump that sells for $ 400.00 + dollars. I only spent about $ 25.00 dollars, for 5 feet of 3/8 ID hose; 2 aquarium bubble stones; 1 straight plastic 3/8 ID valve; glue; several 3/8 ID fittings; 1 qt. plastic tank.

    I started by drilling a hole behind the air filter, ran about 2' of hose to the top of my tank, with about 1/4" of hose in a drilled hole in the tank, located just in front of the fuse box.
    Drilled another hole for a hose with 2 bubble stones connected to it placed in the bottom of tank. This hose is for air filter, I put a funnel on the other end and placed it where air would be forced into it when driving. Glued all holes with tubing in it; vacuum test all fittings, put everything back together. I put 60% water, 20 % alcohol, 20% methanol in the tank.

    Tested by driving 60 miles round trip with valve cut off; got 50.5 MPG. Next day I drive same route at the same speed with valve open; got 55 MPG, better overall performance ...... this just makes the fuel burn better ...... This installation does not bypass any EPA emissions devices, it's legal and so far it's working!!:cool:

    I have been doing this for 2 summers now. It does make ICE run cooler, so I grill block some. Since ICE runs cooler, EWAI does not work that well in winter.

    If I want to coast I leave in D and press on the accelerator just enough to cancel regen. Works beautifully and is the same as coasting in a normal car in N. I think therefore it is non sensical to coast in N in a Prius, it defeats the whole purpose of the Hybrid system and if anything costs more energy.

    But now days our fuel is so low grade:(, the vapor infusion system helps the gas burn more efficiently:cool:.
    This is just a new twist to an old idea; and it works.:)

    I was at solarfest on Forget Me Not Farm last weekend in Tinmouth. A few exhibitors displayed their bio fuel vehicles .
    A guy I was talking with referred to one of them as the Greece god. I didn't get it right away and I replied which one? Greece god?
    The guy looked at me kinda funny for a few seconds... :)
