The top and bottom buffers will probably be the same, maybe a bit smaller.
the cut-out from EV to HV (battery depleting) will probably be at a lower SOC percentage than 23%. Regular HV driving needs about 400-500 Wh from the battery, which is about 5% of the Prime's battery as compared to ~10% of the PiP battery.

I guessed the same. I had one chance so far to drive the Prime on rolling hills and my impression is that the Prime revs the ICE less than a regular Prius on long inclines which implies more traction battery reserve to draw from in HV mode, but I don't have any numbers to share.

Is there a Prime compatible Android App available to read battery SoC values ? I have Torque ... I should give it a go.

So does the PiP on rolling hills (compared to the regular Prius) owing to the larger battery.
My guess for the prime is change-over in depleting battery at 18-20% SOC as compared to 23% with the PiP.

Also the engine's max torque is at a lower rpm (3,600) in the Gen 4/Prime than in the Gen 2/3. (4,200 and 4,000 respectively)

Noted, although I hear the ICE rev at a much lower rpm.

Maybe a flatter torque curve? I was pleasantly surprised to see the max torque at a low 3,600rpm when the Gen 4 was launched. Your anecdotal experience suggest that the torque curve may also have been tweaked. Toyota appears to be trying to minimise the "droning" noise by lower the actual rpm of the engine needed to produce torque but also by increasing sound insulation.

This has not been my experience. I drive about 100-150 miles a day. I start in "EV Auto" until the batteries are gone. Change to "Charge" until I am at 10 mile of EV power and then switch to "EV Auto" mode again. Doing this method I am getting 80+ miles per gallon.

If I go to "HV" I will get only 55-60 mpg.

    Cheers

What's your experience like in EV Auto? how often does the engine come on in EV Auto mode?

When I start in the morning, I switch to "EV Auto" mode and use some motor and EV till I get to the freeway. Since I'm doing mostly freeway, the motor does not really come on. Not much difference with "EV Auto" and "EV Mode" from what I have seen in my driving pattern. "EV Auto" will get me 25+/- miles before the battery is gone. Then I switch to "Charge" mode and do it all again. The secret for me is to charge to 10 mile for the battery and then switch back to "EV Auto"

When you switch from EV to EV auto first thing in the morning, does the ICE starts automatically for the warm-up cycle?

Not to be flipping but don't know and don't care. Would not know what the ICE is if it bit me in the nice person. My goal is to get the best mileage on a daily basis of 100+ miles a day at the fastest possible time. If that meant getting out to push, I would.

ICE is the gasoline engine and it cannot kick you in the nice person as it is in front of you.
Don't know what flipping is but you are certainly rude.

If your goal is high mileage, then maybe an open mind and some learning from others wouldn't hurt. ICE is Internal Combustion Engine.

verb (used without object), flipped, flipping.
To make a flicking movement; strike at something smartly or sharply;snap.
    ie rude, or rudely

My comments were not meant to be rude. For example; I do not know what the ICE is...so its the "engine"
I am open to learning and do have an open mind. Not sure where or when I expressed differently.

Ahh that's interesting. EV Auto was supposedly touted as the mode for the best efficiency (gas or electric) but based on your experience, and your type of driving/commute, it appears to make little difference. If that's the case, why not just leave it in EV mode and only switch to CHG as you normally do.

Also, the 10 mile thing is also an interesting method. I wonder what the differences are between 10 miles and 20 miles (80%). Thanks for sharing!

is the car tracking mpg right? if you use 25 miles of ev and the rest hv, you only get 55-60 mpg after 100-150 miles? that doesn't sound correct.

Its very expensive to generate EV range in Charge mode. Charge mode will cost you 15-20 MPG to get 10 Miles in EV. (Don't quote me, I have not done the numbers. I'll let someone else do the empirical study) So working to get 20 Miles will cost you far to much in true gas range to be a good payback. 10 miles is the sweet spot

If your talking about the Fuelly tag, its a bit behind and a few week old. It also is the range since day one, when I was just "learning" to get good mileage.

If you haven't done the numbers, how do you know your conclusion about the numbers is correct?

i'm just trying to figure out how the car reports mpg. you said in post #28, 'if i go to hv, i only get 55-60 mpg.'
is that a trip meter report? does it include the 25 miles of ev from plugging in?
